“You see what you’re doing to me. Don’t be cruel Lynn, put me out of my misery.”
The doorbell rang as Lynn Wills ran around her condo like a crazy woman. She couldn’t seem to get her best friend, Sade, off the phone long enough to finish up.
Eric was coming over for dinner. It would be the first time he had been inside her condo, and for some reason she felt the need to make sure everything was perfect. She kept telling herself it was no big deal, just platonic friends having a nice dinner.
She kept lying to herself, a once-uncommon habit that she had started to nurture over the last few months. The truth was Eric was hot. Very, very hot. And her virgin body responded every time he came near her. Tonight would be no different. She just prayed she could get through it without making a fool of herself.
“Sade, I’ve got to go. He’s here!”
“Okay girl, put your game face on.”
“It’s just dinner Sade, and it’s not like this is the first time we’ve ever hung out.”
“Yeah. Whatever.” Lynn could all but see her best friend rolling her eyes on the other end of the line. Saying a rather unceremonious goodbye, she quickly disconnected the call.
“Fuck!” She uttered as the doorbell rang out again. Her bare feet slapped the cold tiled floor as she ran to the front of the house. With one last look at herself in the entryway mirror, she took a deep breath and opened the door.
“Eric! Come on in.” She wanted to look composed, but her nerves were taking over as she held the door wider for him to enter.
“Mmm something smells great,” Eric said, cool and calm as ever.
He looked delicious in his casual get-up. The navy blue polo shirt hugged his biceps just right, and his khaki shorts made her want to reach out and grab his rear. It was simple, yet effective enough to make her insides tingle. It pissed her off just a little that he probably hadn’t spent half the time she had getting dressed, and yet he looked like he had just stepped out of a Tommy Bahama photo shoot. Suddenly she felt really overdressed. How could such casual clothes look so damn good?
As he stepped over the threshold she enjoyed a good whiff of his aftershave. He smelled like a man. A beautiful, well dressed, never-miss-a-day-at-the-gym man. Even through his polo shirt she could see his well-sculpted chest. She groaned on the inside as she shut and locked the door.
She turned to face the object of her fantasies. His green eyes were glued to her chest. She had caught him doing that a lot lately. Their platonic friendship had taken a quick turn about a month and a half back. One too many drinks and an innocent kiss were to blame. Well, it wasn’t that innocent, she reminded herself.
It had been the second time they’d hung out alone. He walked her to the front door of her condo and stopped just behind her as she began unlocking the door.
The heat from his body engulfed her, sending arousal straight to her center that night. She knew at that moment her feelings for him had grown from just friends to a crush phase.
She had had one glass of wine too many that night. When she turned to tell him goodnight he came closer, crowding her against the door of her condo, and he had asked her for a small kiss.
His rough, lust-filled voice sent chills through her body as his hard chest pressed into her breast, setting her nipples on fire.
His lips grazed hers in a back and forth motion. Her traitorous body responded immediately.
Out of habit, she stuck her tongue out to lick her bottom lip in indecision. Without hesitation he sucked it right into his mouth, taking the decision out of her hands. She melted into him like warm butter.
The kiss was explosive, and seemed to last forever. His hands squeezed her ass through the cotton fabric of her skirt as he rubbed his erection against her mound. They stood out on her front porch for all to see.
When they finally broke apart; only the sound of heavy breathing occupied the air between them. They stared at each other, both shocked and hungry with desire.
Similar to what they were doing now.
“Lynn?” Eric’s voice pulled her back to the present. His green eyes made their way upward, idling at her lips. She licked them nervously, and he groaned. He was thinking about the kiss too. But this was only dinner. The more she told herself that, the less she believed it. She cleared her throat.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“These are for you.”
“Thank you.” So, he brought beautiful flowers. What woman turns down beautiful flowers? Friends bought friends flowers, right?
Sure they do when they are sick, getting married, having a baby…
What did red roses symbolize again?
Damn it, Lynn, stay focused.
“Sorry, it’s been a long day. Come on in. I’ll put these in water.” Accepting the roses, she led the way down the hall, past the sitting room and into the kitchen.
She increased the sway of her hips in hopes that he was watching. Her Mama loved to say, “Don’t dangle your steak in front of a lion unless you plan on feeding it to him.” She knew this was a dangerous game to play, but couldn’t seem to help herself when he was around. Plus, nothing her mama said ever really made sense.
“I hope you like lasagna,” she said to Eric. “I’m just finishing up, and then dinner will be served.”
“What sides are we having?”
She knew a loaded question when she heard one. If he was trying to drive her crazy he was off to a good start. She could feel his gaze slide down her back and land on her ass.
“Umm, garlic bread, salad, and your choice of red wine, milk, or DP. I’m just going to take the bread out of the oven, finish the salad, and we’ll be set.”
Her hands shook as she filled a glass vase with water for the flowers. Why was she so nervous? This was Eric. Her sweet, caring, sexy-as-hell, but platonic friend and co-worker. She could do this. Shaking off the chill, she finished up with the flowers and placed them on the kitchen island. She felt him watching her.
“Is there anything I can help with?” His breath brushed her right ear sending a current of electricity straight to her core. He was really close. She would have to get a handle on this before the whole evening got out of hand.
Turning around to him she quickly realized her mistake. He was really close. Any fight she had left would be gone in five, four, three, and two…
“Eric, we work together.” It came out so quickly that she wasn’t sure if she made any sense. Her voice trembled and there was no hiding it. She wouldn’t meet his gaze because then he would know she had no fight left. The fight was an old one that was getting harder every time they found themselves alone. Sensual awareness filled the air so thickly neither could ignore it. And now that they had kissed it was even worse.
She chose to stare at his chest instead of meeting the familiar heat she knew she would find in his eyes.
Sometimes Lynn wished she could be one of those audacious, daring women. If she was then she’d slide her hands under his shirt just to feel the hardness she was sure was there. He told her he went to the gym four days a week. She could tell.
He took a step back, and when she finally looked at him he smirked. He’d caught her staring.
“I know the rules Lynn. I’m sorry, I’ll behave.” He looked down at her with half a smile.
Turning back to the bread she smiled to herself. The rules had been set a few months back. Don’t mix business and pleasure. It was plain and simple, though the lines had become a bit blurred in the last few weeks. It was mostly her fault, because lately she had found herself playing jump rope with “the lines.” She wanted him, but had way too much to lose. Their friendship had grown to mean a lot to her. He hadn’t made it a secret that he wanted her, all of her, and she wasn’t up for grabs.
“But,” Eric said after a short pause, “I still don’t understand your reasoning.” His voice was low as his hand gently pulled one of her braids back and tucked it behind her ear. Taking a deep breath, she turned to face him.
“Eric, we’ve been through this. We work together and that alone could complicate things. It’d change everything. You know …”
He cut her off, crowding her near the counter. “See, that’s where you’re wrong.” With his hands on her hips he pulled her snugly against him. “It doesn’t have to be complicated.” With a finger under her chin, he forced her head up to meet his gaze.
“Do you have any idea how good you look in this dress?” he paused briefly then laid his forehead against hers. “Don’t answer that. Because I’m sure you do. That’s why you’re wearing it, and please don’t offend me by lying about it. It’s things like this dress that complicate things.”
He was calling her out, and he was right. She had spent almost two hours in Macy’s looking for the perfect dress for tonight, and she sure as heck didn’t get it on sale. She didn’t know what to say, but she knew she needed distance. Breaking away, she walked around him to the other side of the island, where she found the courage to speak.
“Okay, you caught me, and I’ll admit that it was stupid on my part to even wear it. How about I go change and we start the night over?”
“No!” He held his hand out to stop her. “I mean, please don’t. You look amazing.” His voice lowered. The compliment made her insides melt. In the short amount of time that she’d known him he had thrown more compliments her way then her ex, Darius, had in the years of their relationship.
He took a deep breath as he continued to stare at her. Had he even blinked yet? The corners of his sexy lips begin a slow turn upward. What the hell was so funny?
“You want me.”
“I…” Lynn couldn’t find her voice.
“Do I scare you Lynn?”
“What? No! Ain’t nobody scared of you.” She was lying. She was afraid. Afraid of what he could want from her. He was one of those rare, commitment types. She could feel it, and thanks to Darius she no longer wanted any of that. Eric had told her once before that he wanted more than just a friendship with her. And there he stood, staring at her, and she couldn’t seem to break eye contact.
“Then it’s because I’m white.” What the hell? How had he come up with that? They had hung out almost every day for the last few months. If they weren’t together then they were on the phone. If his race had ever been an issue he certainly wouldn’t have been invited into her condo.
He was getting desperate. That was the only solution she could come up with. She smiled at him because she couldn’t hold back, and then laughter erupted from her body. He stood there staring at her as if she had grown a second head, his facial expression serious.
“What’s so funny?” he asked, obviously puzzled.
“You are.” She continued laughing. “We are in the twenty-first century Eric. A person’s skin color no longer matters. Well, to some, maybe it does, but definitely not to me.” Trying to stop and catch her breath, she saw the moment the realization hit him.
But she had been laughing so hard at him that she was blind to the fact that he had slowly begun making his way around this island. He took full advantage, moving right in front of her and taking her face between his hands.
He had waited patiently to do this again, and now he couldn’t wait anymore. Day in and day out, watching her round hips sway around the office, it had all become too much. After their first kiss she went on as if it hadn’t happened, whereas he had come to the conclusion that he wanted her in every way possible. He had kept a constant hard on at work because of it. It took all of his strength to not lock them both in his office and fuck her across his desk.
So, while Lynn was still finishing her laughter, Eric used one swift move to kiss her before she could stop him.
And she didn’t try to stop him.
Gripping her hips, Eric pulled her more firmly into the kiss and into his erection. God, she tasted just as good as before. Groaning against her lips he picked her up and placed her on the island. Just minutes ago, he hated the damn thing that she had used as a barrier against him. Now he would use it to his advantage. Spreading her knees, he stepped in between them.
His hips involuntarily jerked against her. The warmth between her thighs seemed to draw him in, begging for more. Whether it was intentional or not, her long brown legs made their way around his hips caging him into the prison of her heat. As he nibbled along her jaw line she moaned for him to stop, but her legs pulled him in even closer.
He refused to stop a kiss that felt this good unless of course she asked him too in earnest. And at the moment she didn’t actually look or feel like she would oppose. He sucked on her plump bottom lip, enjoying the fullness of it.
“I want you.” He spoke through heavy breaths.
“Nooo,” she moaned, even as her arms tightened around his neck.
“Yes.” Squeezing her round ass, he lost himself in the feel of it all. Greedily, he rubbed his erection harder against her until she moaned for him again. She needed to feel the instant effect she had on him.
“MMMMMMM.” He felt the vibration of her moan all the way to his balls.
“You see what you’re doing to me,” his husky voice whispered. “Don’t be cruel Lynn. Put me out of my misery.” He was begging now, but he didn’t care. He wanted her that badly. They had been tiptoeing around this for a long time. The past few months had been filled with cold showers and lots of lotion. He hated being in the friend zone with her. He continued licking the sensitive spot along her neck.
“No.” She whimpered.
“Why?” He spoke, taking short breaths. “I know you want this as much as I do.” He continued nibbling along her neck. He knew he sounded like an ass for asking. Nevertheless, he had to know why she kept pushing him away.
“It is because you’re white.”
He stared at her as if she had slapped him. But it had worked, Lynn thought, and that’s all that mattered. It was a distraction to slow them down and focus on this date — what was supposed to be only dinner. Oh, who the fuck was she kidding?
“Look at your face. You look like I stole your puppy. I was serious when I said your color doesn’t matter to me, you goober, and I was also serious when I said just dinner.”
Exhaling loudly, he rubbed his palms up and down the outside of her thighs before slowly backing away. She could feel the frustration rolling off of him in waves, but like the gentleman he was he just smiled. He scrubbed his face as he turned away from her. Quickly hopping off the Island she straightened her dress. Now all they had to do was get through dinner.
End Chapter 1
Dinner was uncomfortable. He couldn’t stop staring at her mouth. She went on and on about work, but the small talk wouldn’t change the fact that he wanted inside her badly. There was no way he would forget what had happened just moments ago in the kitchen. He was itching to lose himself inside of her, to taste her everywhere.
What would she taste like? He bet she was sweet like chocolate. The thought of her melting against his tongue caused him to clear his throat.
Reaching below the table he adjusted himself in his khakis, failing to find the relief he was seeking.
“Eric?” She looked at him from across the table.
“I’m sorry, what was that?”
Shit. How long had he been out? She was obviously done eating. Her salad plate had been pushed to the side and her napkin sat on top of her half-eaten lasagna.
“I was asking if you wanted desert. There’s an apple pie in the fridge that I could heat up.”
“Nah I’m good.” The only desert he wanted was one she wasn’t serving. “I’ll help you with clean up duties.”
Rising from his seat he began to collect the dishes. As she reached for the lasagna pan he stopped her.
“Here give me that. Go enjoy some wine. I got this.”
“You really don’t have to do that.”
“It’s the least I can do since you cooked.” Plus, he needed something to keep his hands busy. He was so close to throwing her right back on that island and saying to hell with it.
Pull yourself together man.
Ignoring the voice in his head, he listened to her every move behind him as he washed the dishes. She moved around the kitchen, putting things back into place. After a few long minutes, there was only silence. Quickly finishing up, he dried his hands and turned to see her sitting on the island watching him, wine glass in hand. Her legs were crossed at the ankles and a single towel lay across her lap as if to shield herself from him. A towel definitely wouldn’t be enough to stop him.
“Um, how long have you been sitting there?” He was close to losing control. He could feel it. His palms were sweating. His heart racing and she was back on the damn island. She could have sat anywhere else in the kitchen, but she chose the island. Because of that, he was now thinking with a different head.
“Not long. Why?” She smirked. “You afraid I’ll tell someone at the office that you actually enjoy washing dishes?” She lifted her glass and took a sip of her wine, licking the excess from her top lip. His dick twitched at the sight of her tongue. “No worries. Your secret is safe with me.” He knew for a fact she wouldn’t tell anyone. If she did then she would have to admit he had been inside of her condo, and Ms. Don’t Mix Business With Pleasure would never admit to that. It frustrated him.
She was smiling at him. Her lips were a thing of beauty. He wanted to taste them again. A plan began to form in his head.
“Well, that’s not fair, now is it?” He frowned, “You know one of my secrets, and I don’t know any of yours.” Washing dishes would hardly ruin his reputation.
“Well, that’s because I have no secrets.” She’d smiled and played right into his trap. Slowly making his way to the island he watched her smile falter, and her legs tighten. She held her glass of wine in both hands in the center of her lap. He almost felt bad for her. Almost. Leaning in he placed one hand on each side of her, trapping her on the island.
“Oh yeah?” He tilted his head to the side. “Then tell me this. Why do you keep running from me?” Her shallow breaths filled the silence in the kitchen. The attraction was getting to her, and he could see it. She closed her eyes to shut him out, but he wouldn’t have that. Not again. He took a kiss with a vengeance, and all hell broke loose.
Lynn hated this fight of back and forth with herself. She just needed one more kiss. One more, and then she would ask him to leave. Why was it so hard to tell him no, or yes for that matter? His tongue made so many promises, promises that her ex-boyfriend had already made and broken. She just needed a little more time with his mouth. Her moans echoed through the kitchen.
“Eric, stop,” she moaned, but unconvincingly. His mouth was moving down her throat now, and his tongue. Oh, his tongue felt so good. The little flicks he gave here and there pushed her body into overdrive. When had her body become so responsive? Maybe it had always been this way. No way was that true. She had never felt this way kissing Darius. Never felt like giving herself over to him completely.
His hands were on her hips, squeezing her thickness for dear life. “God, you smell good.” She could hear him take a deep breath, breathing her in right before his tongue made contact with the shell of her ear. It was too much.
“Eric, stop!” She pushed him back with what little strength she could find. She watched him, frustrated, rubbing his palms up and down his face and then through his hair. She silently wished they were still on her bare skin. Sliding off the island she turned away from him. What the fuck was wrong with her?
“Maybe I should just go.” His voice came out rough.
“No!” She quickly turned to him. Shit, she had to fix this. “I mean you don’t have to do that.” What was she saying? There was really no reason for him to stay. They had dinner, and he declined desert. So why couldn’t he leave?
Yep she had lost it.
“Which is it Lynn? Do you want me to stay or do you want me to go? Make up your mind.” She couldn’t answer past the knot in her throat. “Can you not see what you’re doing to me? Damn it!” He uttered out in frustration. He gently took both of her hands in his. His hands were shaking.
“I feel like I’m going out of my mind chasing you, and you want this just as bad as I do. Yeah, we work together, but we are both professionals. How do you know this won’t work if you won’t give me a chance?” Releasing her hands, he stepped away from her and she felt a chill all the way down to her bones. She remained quiet, staring down at her now cold hands. It bothered her that she did this to a once very calm Eric.
“I’m sorry, Lynn, but I can’t stay. I won’t pretend that I don’t want more. Not anymore.” He turned to leave.
Her anger involuntary pushed the words passed her lips. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” He turned back to her. She was shaking with anger now. Damn him and his good looks.
“Because I won’t put out? Is that what this is about? You know what, fuck you Eric!”
“No!” He roared, clearly upset with her accusation. “Is that what you think of me? After all this time how could you think that’s all I’m about?” She knew better, but it was the only ammo she had. “It’s about you being blind to the fact that I am in love with you.” He was practically raising his voice now but didn’t seem to notice. Love? He loved her? “You have all these damn walls up like I’m only spending time with you for one thing. God you….”
“Just stop okay! I don’t care what it’s about. I don’t need to explain myself to you. I warned you months ago that this could never go anywhere. Did you think you could change that? You’re right, you do need to leave!”
“We need to talk Lynn.” He stared at her with something similar to fear in his eyes.
“No, we don’t. Goodbye Eric.”
Leaving him, she walked into the sitting room and sat on the loveseat. She could hear him making his way to the door and her heart dropped.
Stop him you idiot. Don’t let him get away.
The front door creaked as he opened it. She wanted to run and stop him, but her pride told her to stay strong. After hearing the click of the door she got off the lounge to go and lock it. She caught her breath as she rounded the corner. He was still there. He stood with his forehead against the back of the door, his eyes closed.
“Why are you still here?” Silence followed her question. She was afraid to go to him, and afraid he would leave if she left him standing there. She stood in silence.
“I shouldn’t have yelled at you. I’m so sorry.” His paused, “I don’t understand why or how I fell in love with you. I just know you have some type of hold on me, and I can’t walk away from you. Trust me, after week two of getting to know you I tried to stay away . I just can’t. I’m addicted to you, and I haven’t even made love to you. It’s scary to think how I would be if you ever let me.”
Her feet were like cement as he turned to walk to her. He put his hands in his pockets as if touching her would burn him. He stared at her with his jaw tight.
“What are you doing to me?”
“I’m not doing anything.” She could feel her anger evaporating. Guilt flooded her when she saw the look of defeat in his eyes. It scared her to think he had given up on her.
He’s not Darius.
She knew that, but it didn’t change the fact that she was scared. He was asking for more than she had given anyone else, and she could no longer stop her body from reacting in his presence.
“Why are you trying so hard to fight this? Did someone hurt you?” She couldn’t and wouldn’t answer that. How do you explain to someone that your previous relationship was an abusive one? That your ex was the reason you feared commitment?
“I wouldn’t hurt you Lynn. You know that right?” He was staring at her, eyes full of agony. She was hurting him, and it wasn’t fair. He would never intentionally hurt her and she knew that.
“I…” She was stuck. Her response would just be more lies, and she was so tired of lying to herself when it came to Eric. She had no answer for any of his questions. It was time to make one of the most important decisions of her life. Time to start a new chapter in her life.
End of Chapter 2
Reaching for his hand she quietly directed him to the bottom of the stairs. Her hands shook as she took the first stair, her heart beat roaring in her ears. What the hell did she do first?
“Lynn, what are you doing?”
She couldn’t talk right now. If she did she would begin to panic, and nothing could ruin the mood faster than a panic attack.
Don’t stop Lynn.
“Lynn, wait!” He spoke frantically.
Turning to him at the top of the stairs she reached for his face and for the first time since meeting him, she initiated a kiss. The kiss was symbolic. He groaned against her lips as the kiss quickly began to pick up speed and tumble out of control.
He broke the kiss, gasping for air. “Bedroom.” He groaned out. “Where is it?”
Walking backwards she slowly guided him towards her bedroom. Their feet slid loudly across the wood flooring. When the back of her thighs hit her bed she knew there was no turning back.
“Lynn, please tell me to stop.” He pleaded to her. He was at war with himself and on the brink of losing control. To reassure him she reached for the front button of his cargoes.
He lost it.
Crushing his mouth down on hers he grabbed her ass and lifted her onto the bed. He kissed her like a mad man. Feeding his tongue into her mouth and sucking her tongue into his. His hands seemed to be everywhere at one time. “God, I’ve wanted you so badly for so long.”
He pulled the straps of her dress aside to gain better access to her breasts. She was lucky in that department. Her breasts weren’t huge, but they weren’t too small either. Thanks to her push up bra they looked damn near perfect. He moved lower to kiss the top of them. His hands made their way up the outside of her thighs, taking the hem of her little black dress with them. He pulled her dress over her head and stared down at her.
He hissed, “Jesus Christ. Look at you. You’re a fucking goddess.” His greedy eyes stared down at her. He looked like a lion on the prowl: nostrils flared, breaths coming heavily, and eyes showing deep hunger.
Oh, now she got it.
“My own personal goddess.” Her mama had a point. He was staking claim.
She felt his gaze travel over every inch of her body. Silently, she thanked the heavens she wore a matching red bra and thong set. Feeling the need to cover up she reached for the blanket.
“Please don’t. You’re so beautiful Lynn.” He hovered above her pushing her back onto the mattress as he came down for another sultry kiss. He sucked her bottom lip into his mouth and his teeth nipped at it. She reached down the front of his shorts and grabbed his vast erection. The size was not at all what she had expected. She was in over her head.
As she fought back and forth in her head on whether or not to mention she was still a virgin, he wasted no time removing her panties. With his palms on her knees he spread her wider. Fully exposing her for his eyes, he leaned in and took a deep breath. “You smell so good.” His nose grazed her and she jumped. She had never felt so unmasked in her life.
“Eric I….” She was interrupted as his tongue began doing things she had never felt before. No other man had ever touched her, let alone licked her, there in her entire life. Using his fingers, he opened her even wider. Taking her, exploring her, and pushing her towards something she wasn’t familiar with. He licked through the maze of her slick folds tenaciously.
Pulling his hair she screamed for more, and without hesitation he gave it to her. Shamelessly she rubbed herself against his face. Arching her back she opened wider, giving him all access. She was losing herself in the bliss of it all. There was no way she could prepare for the jolt of electricity that hit her. The scream that followed was ripped from her throat without permission. The feeling was incredible.
“Fuck! You’re so responsive, baby.” As she came down from pure bliss she felt him push one long finger into her. “Give me one more.”
Now who was losing it?
“I can’t! I don’t have any more to give.” There was no way her body had the energy to go through that again. Her eyes felt heavy and her body boneless.
“Yes. You can baby. You’re beautiful when you come, please just one more for me?” He went back to gently stroking her clit again with his tongue, his finger working magic at her center. “You’re so tight baby.” Before long, she felt her body heading down another waterfall.
“Eric!” Stars burst behind her eyelids. Gripping the comforter with both hands, she arched from the bed again. She was sure she was going to pass out from pleasure. As she came down a second time she felt him pat her mound softly.
“Good girl. I knew you could do it baby.” She watched as he proceeded to lick his lips as if he hadn’t had enough of her.
A greedy lion.
Her mama never said what happened after the lion got the steak.
“Come here.” She was grateful he did because she had no energy to go to him. She pulled him down for a kiss and she tasted everything. His taste mixed with her juices. It was like sipping on the finest wine. It turned her on to taste herself on his lips.
He laid over her his massive erection at her center. “I need you so bad right now Lynn. Please tell me no. Tell me to leave and I will I swear. I don’t have it in me to stop right now.” He begged.
He pushed away from the bed and quickly stripped. Grabbing his erection firmly, he began to stroke it slowly back and forth. He climbed between her legs looking down at her through glassy eyes. He had lost it, and he wasn’t turning back.
“I can’t go slowly this time baby, but I promise to make it up to you.” Spreading her legs he positioned himself at her opening. It was the only warning she got before he plunged deep into her.
It was the most painful feeling she had ever felt. Her innocence gone in one deep hard thrust.
She was no longer a virgin.
Grinding her teeth together, she squeezed her eyes shut and tried her best to disregard the pain. She was so lost in her last orgasms that she forgot to tell him. She was unaware that he had not moved another inch. The silence was filled with a loud hiss from Eric.
“Please tell me I’m imagining what just happened.”
With her eyes still closed, she could feel him staring down at her. Still adjusting to the pain and his size, she chose to stay silent. Not that she knew what to say any way.
“Open your eyes Lynn.” She did as he asked her too. Staring at his face through watery eyes. The look on his face showed shock and confusion.
“No, you can’t be.” He spoke in disbelief.
“I know I should have told you…” Before she could finish he began moving away from her, taking his time so that he couldn’t hurt her further. It didn’t stop her from flinching in pain when the large head of his penis finally made its way out.
“Fuck!” he yelled running his hands threw his hair and over his face he turned away from her. “God I’m so sorry Lynn. I swear, had I known I wouldn’t have pushed you. That is not how your first time was supposed to be.”
She wasn’t sure why, but she felt guilty. He was fuming as he began pacing the room, blind to the fact that he was naked, and still fully erect.
“Eric I’m sorry. I should have told you.” Grabbing a throw from the end of the bed she covered herself. The room had suddenly become cold.
“You shouldn’t be sorry, I should. I shouldn’t have made you do this. Are you okay? Did I hurt you? Oh God I’m so sorry. Had I known, I swear I would have prepared you better.” Standing there with his hands on his hips he stared down at her. “God baby I’m so sorry.”
“Yes, I’m fine. Would you stop saying sorry? You didn’t make me do anything. I wanted it. I’ve wanted it for months.” She didn’t miss the fact that he had said sorry to her more in the last five minutes than Darius had said in their whole relationship. He was beating himself up for something that wasn’t his fault.
“No, you didn’t, and you tried to stop it in the kitchen and I pushed you. But how was I supposed to know you were still a virgin Lynn? I don’t even know how to react to this.”
“You don’t have to,” she said, smiling gently. “Your body seems to be responding for you.” He followed her stare down his body and tried to cover his erection with his hands.
He failed miserably.
Pushing herself and his attention further onto the bed she pushed the throw aside. Sitting up she pulled her bra straps down one by one and threw her bra onto the bed next to her. Spreading her legs, she gave him a full view of her most private area. She could see in his eyes he was fighting for control. Maybe she could be audacious.
Trailing her right hand downward she left a line of heat from her breast to her pussy. She looked him in the eye as her fingers moved. There was definitely some discomfort, but she wouldn’t let it show.
“Lynn, we don’t have to do this.” His hand was wrapped around his erection again, and he gently stroked it back and forth.
“The hard part is done Eric. You either finish what you started or I’ll finish myself.” She made a show of closing her eyes and tilting her head back. Letting her hands roam where his mouth had explored before. Gasping as her finger dipped in. He cursed under his breath just before she felt his weight on the bed beside her.
“If we are going to do this, we’re going to do it right.”
“Were we doing it wrong the first time?” she teased.
“Way too soon for jokes Lynn.” He took her with him as he rolled onto his back. Straddling him she looked down at him confused.
“I want you in complete control this time. I don’t want to hurt you, and I would if I had control.” Gently pulling at her nape he brought her down for a kiss. The kiss was nothing like the others. The hunger was gone, and the lion was tamed. She didn’t like it. His fingertips made their way down her back, sending chills down her spine. He slowly lifted her into position.
They both exhaled as he filled her completely. The second time he entered her was slow and easy. She held her position as her body adjusted around him again. With shallow movements she slowly began to move up and down on his shaft. There was still some pain, but not enough to stop her. He stared up at her calmly, letting her take control, his jaw tight. This wasn’t enough. She needed more from him. So they had had a minor setback, that did not mean that the rest of the night should be ruined.
“Beautiful.” His voice was rough as he massaged her breast. He was trying his best to hold back. She didn’t want him to hold back, she wanted him out of control. Her hips begin a sweet slow grind. She heard the hitch in his breathing right before the fire returned in his eyes.
“Slow down.” He spoke through clenched teeth. She ignored his command and began to grind faster. He grabbed her hips and followed her movement.
The position had backfired.
The friction felt so good as yet another orgasm began to build. Repeatedly, the head of his shaft rubbed her sensitive spot. Moaning loudly, she grabbed her breasts knowing he would be watching her every move. Tweaking and pulling at her nipples, she stared down at him.
“Are you trying to make me lose it?” His fingers dug into the thickness of her hips, as he pushed deeper into her sending their grinding to a whole new level.
“Is that what you want baby?” He asked her as he continued his everlasting grind, now controlling her hips with his hands. “You want me to lose control?”
“Yes.” She hissed out. “Yes, I do. Please, Eric.”
“Remember, you asked for it.” Flipping her onto her back, he took back full control. He began taking her with long hard strokes growling with every thrust, pounding deep into her. “God, you’re so tight baby.”
Moaning uncontrollably, she dug her nails into his back. She saw stars as he bit into the sensitive skin along her neck then lick the sting away.
He came down on top of her until they lay chest to chest. With shallow thrusts he took her mouth in a sensual kiss that made her forget for the second time of the night. It was like floating out in the middle of the ocean. She knew if she moved reality would sink in and ruin the moment. There was no way she would ruin this moment.
He nuzzled her jawline just before his mouth found her neck. Grazing the sensitive skin below her ear with his teeth and sucking. His hips continued their shallow rhythm. “Lynn, I love you.” She heard his words, but the storm building below would not allow her to register them.
“Wrap your legs around me baby.”
She did as he asked, thankful that he hadn’t pushed her on the love subject. The new position gave her a totally different feeling. Eric obviously knew what he was doing. She was so happy he wasn’t a selfish lover. She had heard stories from her friends about men who could be selfish lovers, men who only cared about their pleasure. Eric was definitely not one of those men.
“You feel that baby?” He whispered into her ear as his hips began to grind against her again.
“Oh yes…” Had she actually just purred? Dear lord the things this man could make her do.
“You’re beautiful Lynn. How did I get so lucky?”
“Eric you…” His tongue on her neck halted her reply. How could he expect her to say anything when he kept taking her breath away? She finally gave up and moaned in response.
“I think I could get used to hearing you purr for me baby.” He pushed up until he hovered above her. The new space allowed air to rush over her now damp skin causing goose bumps to spread over her. She didn’t want any space between them.
“No, please come back.” She circled her arms around his neck pulling him back down.
He returned without objection, murmuring against her lips. “Don’t worry baby I’m not going anywhere. I won’t ever leave you I promise.”
No words had ever made her feel so safe. She closed her eyes to hide the tears that began to form. No one else had ever made her feel so cherished.
He paused in his movements, panic set in his features. “What’s wrong baby? Am I hurting you?”
“Oh God no, you feel amazing. I just…. No one has ever done all this for me. Given me this much attention. It’s a little overwhelming that’s all. It’s not something I’m used to.” She watched as his whole body relaxed.
He gently laid his forehead against hers. “Then get used to it honey, because you deserve it and so much more.” Taking her mouth in a sensual kiss, he began sliding in and out of her in long slow strokes.
“Oh God, Eric.”
“You’re mine now Lynn. Do you understand what that means baby?” The roughness in his voice caused her insides to quiver. She really wanted to know what it all meant, but all she could do at the moment was moan. Somewhere in the back of her mind she knew this was a subject she should tip toe into, but she was not thinking clearly at the moment. Luckily, he answered for her.
“That means you will be worshiped, fussed over, and treated like the goddess that you are. Is that okay baby? Can I make you feel like this every night?” His hips began to grind into her once more as if to drive his point home.
“Yes, oh yes. Yes, yes!”
“Tell me you’re mine Lynn. Say it, and I promise to make it worth it baby.” His hips began to circle at her center.
“Yes! I’m yours, I’m yours, I’m yours!” His arms circled her waist tightly as he pulled her up to straddle his lap, pushing himself deeper into her warm tunnel. Grasping at her nape, he found her mouth again. The sounds of her moans and his groans filled the bedroom.
The storm in her body was close. His pubic hair scraped at her clit as the head of his shaft repeatedly assaulted her G-Spot. His mouth found her neck as he continued his torture. Nibbling on her shoulder, he changed his tempo.
“You feel so amazing. Come for me baby. Give me all of it.” She dug her nails into his back as another orgasm took over her entire body. He gripped at her braids pulling her head back to get access to her neck. Just when she thought her orgasm was over he yanked another one from her now boneless body.
Her name ripped from his lips right before his body went tense as he growled out his release. She had never felt so free in her life. She was still floating back down to earth when it hit her that neither of them had thought to use a condom.
“You’re a Coward.”
“Fuck you.” Lynn sat at her best friend’s kitchen table the next morning, nursing her cup of coffee. When she woke up, Eric was gone, but she knew it wouldn’t be for long. He left a note about going to grab breakfast. She knew eventually he would be back, and that meant they would have to talk about the night before. He would ask for more than she was willing to give, and she wouldn’t be able to give it to him. The night before had been incredible, and Eric had said things that any normal woman would love to hear, but they were things that scared the shit out of her in the light of day.
So she got the hell out of dodge. She had packed a bag and left her condo so fast that she’d forgotten her toothbrush. She needed time to think, somewhere he wouldn’t find her, and that place was Sade’s. In all the months of them hanging out, Eric had only met Sade once and that was just in passing at the office. So, chances were good that he wouldn’t come knocking on her friend’s door.
“So you’re just going to hide here all weekend?” Sade sat across from Lynn in her pajamas. Her hair was still in a wrap, and sleep still lingered in her eyes. Sade wasn’t a morning person.
“That’s the plan.” It sounded like pretty good idea at eight in the morning.
“And work? I mean you’re going to have to face him eventually.” There was that little setback. This could make working together pretty awkward. She hadn’t really been thinking about that when she left. This was why she never wanted to mix business with pleasure in the first place.
“I just need a little time. It’s a lot to take in. I mean, for crying out loud Sade, he took my virginity last night! Not my ice cream cone. Is it so wrong that I’m not ready to face him again just yet?” Every move Lynn made was a reminder of everything he had done to her body. Her body felt deliciously sore, and every time she moved her brain flashed back to the night before.
He took her more than once. In the bed, against the shower wall, and in the bed again. Not one time did he use a condom, and not one time did she have a problem with it. Even now, she wanted it all again.
“Stop acting like you’re a damn teenager. You’re an adult. You had sex. It is perfectly normal. This is not the end of the world, Lynn. Well, unless he was bad in bed. Then that’s just a crime. There is no way someone that looks as good as he does can be bad in bed. Is that what’s wrong? Was he bad in the sack?”
“God no,” Lynn answered. “ He was incredible.” Not that she had anything to compare it to, but if what Eric did to her was considered bad she was way in over her head. “That’s the problem. He was so good I can’t think straight, and if I can’t think straight, then how in the hell can I be around him right now? Especially when it seems he’s praying I get pregnant and will have his beautiful babies.”
“Hold up,” Sade said. “What the hell did you say?” Lynn knew the time would come where she would have to give Sade all the details from the night before, and now was just as good a time as any. She told her everything.
Sade jumped from her seat, “Have you lost your mind?! You didn’t use a condom the first, second or third time you had sex? Who the hell gave you a college degree?”
Lynn was not at all shocked at her friend’s response. They had been friends since elementary school. She was an only child, so Sade was more like a sister to her. Lynn had grown up in a house with a single mother who blamed her for everything; she had always found comfort across the street with Sade’s family.
Sade’s parents were Lynn’s dream parents. They encouraged their children to do their best in everything. They had dinner together as a family, game nights, movies nights, and family picnics. Back at home Lynn lived off TV dinners and sweet tea until she was old enough to move out of her mama’s house. Now she hated meals that weren’t homemade.
Her relationship with her mama was a strained one. They really only talked when she called Lynn to borrow money. Lynn knew she would never see that money again.
Sade wasn’t a fan of Rosa Burton, but dealt with her because she was Lynn’s mother. Lynn knew she could depend on Sade to tell her the truth, and today would be no exception, whether she wanted to hear it or not.
“I know okay! Don’t yell at me.” Lynn knew this request was pointless to ask of her friend. She would have to sit back and take her lecture like a child.
“Jesus, Lynn!” Sade paced the kitchen mumbling under her breath about how stupid some people were.
“I can hear you, Day.” Day was the nickname Lynn’s mother had given Sade in junior high. Though she was African American, Sade had very fair skin compared to Lynn’s dark complexion. The nickname pissed Sade off, but it had stuck. Maybe using it right now hadn’t been the best idea, but Lynn was already in hot water.
“I hope so, because you may have just ruined your life. Do you understand that if you get pregnant, you’ll be tied to that white boy for the rest of your life?”
“There are worse men to be tied to for life Day. Remember snotty nose Johnny in Mrs. Wilson’s class? Now that’s not someone you want to be tied to,” Lynn joked.
“Oh, you got jokes? You’re hiding in my apartment from a man who took your virginity and may have gotten you pregnant all in one night.” Well when she put it that way, thought Lynn, it did sound a little ridiculous. She saw the next line coming. “Did Darius not hurt you enough?”
Sade always brought up Darius, but for some reason this time it didn’t bother her. Eric wasn’t Darius. That was for sure. Darius turned out to be a first class ass. When they first met, he respected her for keeping her virginity till marriage, but a year into their relationship, he began to push the issue.
One summer night he came home drunk from a night out with the boys. One thing led to another and the police were called. He left her with a broken heart, a black eye, panic attacks, and, thankfully, her virginity. Sade had seen her at her worst, and because of that always made a point to remind her. That was over two years ago, but Sade never let her forget it.
“Calm down Day. All I asked to do was to hide here for a couple days. I’m not asking for child support. I knew what I was getting into every time he fucked me speechless. Can we please talk about something else? If it happens, I’ll deal with it.” Sade looked at her, appalled. Then it hit Lynn. “No! You fool I don’t mean an abortion!”
“Oh, I was going to say,” Sade said, rolling her eyes in the process.
Lynn quickly changed the subject. “I have an idea. How about you make us some pancakes, bacon, and cheesy eggs?” Sade loved to cook. It was the easiest way to distract her. No one Lynn knew could cook like Sade, and lord knew Lynn had worked up an appetite last night.
“I should tell you ‘no,’ but I’m afraid you’ll just try to come and cook it yourself.” They both knew it was a lie. Sade loved her kitchen like it was a newborn baby. She spent more time and money in there than in any other room in her apartment, and it showed. Decorated with an Italian theme, several multicolored bottles of oils lined the counter as a backdrop.
“But,” Sad continued. “Since you’ve obviously lost your damn mind recently you’ll probably just burn my whole damn condo down.”
“I love you too.”
They sat and gossiped the rest of the morning. Sade was nice enough not to bring up the whole Eric ordeal again, but she’d be damned if it wasn’t eating her up on the inside. She knew eventually it would come to this between Eric and Lynn.
She had noticed the change in Lynn months ago. It was subtle at first. He started bringing her breakfast. Then they were going to lunch, and then the movies. She had to hand it to him – the man had patience.
The big problem was Eric had no idea what he was getting into. Thanks to Darius, Lynn would never want the relationship that he obviously wanted.
It worried her that Lynn would get hurt again, but this time it would be her own fault. The minute her friend decided to give up her virginity she had given up her heart as well. It took a lot of trust to give up something so special. She just prayed Eric’s patience outlasted Lynn’s stubbornness. If it didn’t, then this could all blow up in her friend’s face.
The weekend seemed to speed by. Around noon on Sunday Lynn gave in and finally turned her cell phone back on. She found several text messages and missed calls from Eric. Her stomach dropped as she read the through the texts.
8:13am – Hey, I’m back at your place. Get up and open the door, sleepy head. =-)
8:30am – Lynn, wake up, sleepy head…..
8:45am – Your car’s gone. Which can only mean that I’ve been standing here for nothing.
9:02am – Please call me so we can talk.
10:04am – Where are you? I’ll come to you. Just please talk to me.
11:58am – Okay, I get it. You need time. Call me when you’re ready to talk.
9:30pm – Lynn, please just text back. You don’t have to call. I need to know I didn’t screw this up. I’ll stay awake until I hear from you.
11:58pm – It’s almost midnight. You’re not going to call are you?… I’m sorry I fucked up. I love you.
Her heart ached for what he was going through. It wasn’t his fault she was acting like a teenager. She knew putting it off would be pointless, because she would have to face him at work on Monday morning. There was no hiding then. Love? There was no way he could love her.
That is what he was feeling, and also exactly what she was feeling when she blurted out that she loved him the third time he took her body. She was in the middle of an orgasm when the words jumped past her lips. Surely there could be no real confessions of love during the throws of passion. No one could really know what he or she was saying in the middle of an orgasm.
She squeezed her legs together hoping to relieve some of the pressure below. Why did they have to disregard the policy?
She had met Eric while working as an office manager for Williams & Brooks, a well-known law firm in downtown Seattle. He was a rookie lawyer: twenty-six and fresh out of law school. And at the age of twenty-four, she was still holding on to her virginity until marriage.
Well so much for that.
For months she watched him come into the office every morning, grab his coffee, and head to his office. He had thrown the standard “good morning” her way every now and then, but always seemed too busy to chat. He stood well over six feet tall, and made any business suit he wore look incredible. His eyes were beautiful, and, every once in a while, she had caught the green pair staring her. He didn’t seem to be much of a people person, and never once attended office outings.
His clients would pile in, one after the other, giving him no time for breaks or a lunch. He was always the last attorney to leave the office. This left Lynn to assume he was single, because no girlfriend or wife could put up with those hours.
The first time he asked her to dinner had been a huge shocker. She remembered being proud of him because it was the first thing he had done out of his normal routine. Unfortunately for him, she turned him down without a second thought. The second time she had to explain to him her “business and pleasure” policy. It could only lead to trouble and office gossip, she’d said.
He didn’t ask a third time, and she was pretty sure he had gotten the point, until one morning when he showed up an hour early with breakfast.
He used the excuse that he had bought too much, and asked if she would split it with him. She accepted, and they ate in silence. She had caught him several times watching her eat. She was in the middle of swallowing a bite of her sandwich when he got up from his chair. He grabbed his briefcase and thanked her for having breakfast with him, smiling as if he had won a prize. Now that she thought about it, maybe he had won that day. It was the most time she had spent alone with a man in almost two years.
Eventually it became their routine. Every morning, an hour before anyone else arrived, he would bring her breakfast, and she would make sure to look her best. He would slip in questions every now and then, asking about her family and where she went to school, but he never once told her anything about himself. She never felt uncomfortable around him, and he was careful to never over-step any boundaries.
A month after the first breakfast he asked her to dinner again, and that time she accepted. What could it hurt right? Wrong! He took her to one of those fancy restaurants with candles on the table and a piano in the corner. He asked more personal questions and gave her compliments on her smile. The fourth date was her idea. She thought it would be great to invite him to dinner at her condo. It was a place where she could call the shots, and take out all the romantic crap. What an epic fail that was.
Now she was hiding at her best friend’s apartment, contemplating calling in sick for the first time in a year and a half. Tomorrow would be a long day.
Eric arrived at the office an hour early. It was their usual breakfast hour, and he had Lynn’s favorite sandwich ready for her. He hadn’t slept worth crap the last two nights, and he needed to see her. She hadn’t responded to any of his texts or phone calls, and by Sunday afternoon her neighbor still hadn’t seen her car. He sat out in front of her condo for hours, hoping she would come home, but she never did.
He was driving himself insane trying to figure out where he went wrong. How was he supposed to know what he did wrong if she wouldn’t even talk to him?
Well, she had been, until he took that and anything else she would give on Friday night.
He should have taken her once and then fill up a warm bath for her to soak in. Instead, he had pushed her for his own selfish reasons. The worst part was that he didn’t regret any of it. In fact, he wanted her again so bad it hurt to breathe. She was so fucking responsive, and the contrast of their skin drove him crazy every time he entered her. He needed more, but first he had to fix this.
His ex-wife had been right; he was such a selfish bastard. Lucy had always accused him of placing work before their marriage, but she didn’t understand the dedication it took to get through law school. She didn’t understand how hard it was for him to make sure his homework was done and at the same time work a full-time job. She told him she understood, but if that were true then they would still be married.
It had taken him months to get past the fact that she had given up on their marriage, but now he had Lynn. Well, he used to have Lynn. She was so beautiful and so pure, a real breath of fresh air. She and Lucy were totally different women. Lynn’s independence both turned him on and frustrated him. He fell for her long before their intimate encounter, but now he thought he might have ruined everything.
He waited in the parking lot another hour, before her black Lexus entered the lot followed by several other co-workers’ cars.
He knew she was trying to avoid him, and she knew there was no way they would be able to talk with everyone else around in the office. He wasn’t a fan of bringing personal issues to work, but if she was going to try to avoid him at every turn he would have to. Desperate times called for desperate measures.
He watched as one long, toned, dark leg exited the driver’s side of her car, followed by the other. Her legs were the first thing he noticed about her the day his colleague, Mike, another attorney at the firm, had introduced them. They seemed to go on for miles. He had dreamed about them being wrapped around his waist as he pounded into her, wrapped around his ears as her cream found his tongue. Great, now he would spend his entire morning with a semi-erection. He needed to taste her again.
Her infectious laugh brought him back from yet another daydream. She was conversing with her assistant, Angel, as they walked side by side into the building. Quickly exiting his SUV, Eric grabbed his brief case and their breakfast. If he was quick enough he could catch them at the elevator and ride up with her.
“Hold the door?” He yelled as he all but sprinted through the lobby towards the elevator. A hand reached out to grab the door as it began to close. He rounded the corner to see a smiling Angel.
“Come on in?” She said as he entered the elevator. Lynn stood in the corner, eyes staring down at her Blackberry. He highly doubted she was looking at anything of importance. He knew avoidance when he saw it.
“Thanks. Good morning ladies.” The greeting was meant primarily for Lynn. Her reply was low and mumbled, a far cry from Angel’s, who was obviously a morning person. He made his way to the back of the small space and stood right next to her. Brushing her arm with his, he felt her immediately tense up and saw her thumbs hover over her cellphone. She still wouldn’t meet his gaze.
“It’s way too early to look so serious, Ms. Wills.” She tucked her cell phone away. He knew she would have to respond. If she didn’t, then Angel would get suspicious, and suspicion was more than enough ammo to start the rumor mill in the office. He watched Lynn inhale deeply as she tilted her head in his direction.
“I had my phone off all weekend, so now I’m trying to play catch up.” She pasted on a tight smile and broke eye contact. She pulled her cellphone out again and proceeded to avoid him.
“I’ll talk to Mike about that upgrade you wanted. Maybe that’ll help. We wouldn’t want you to miss any important calls or messages.”
“Oh, you don’t have to do that. I’m receiving my calls and messages just fine. It just takes a while for emails. That’s what I get for trying to have a little time for myself.”
He got the message loud and clear. She held her shoulders back, pushing her breasts tightly against the white silk fabric of her shirt in the process. His dick twitched at the sight of her perfectly outlined nipples, causing him to clear his throat. He needed to focus.
“Seems we had conflicting weekends. While you were avoiding phone calls, I was waiting for a very important one.” He was an ass for saying it, but at the moment he was totally okay with being an ass.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” She didn’t sound sorry. In fact, she didn’t even sound like she cared that he spent his entire weekend waiting by the phone. It pissed him off that she had him acting like an adolescent. This was not like him. He didn’t behave like this in the presence of others. What was she doing to him and why was she doing it?
He chose a different approach. “I need to meet with you today about the Jackson case. I need a few things looked over and notarized so I can fax them over to the court before noon tomorrow.” It was a lie, and they both knew it. The Jackson case was Mike’s, but Angel didn’t know that. This casual elevator crap was not working, and he needed to talk to Lynn.
“I’ll have to see what I have open, and get back to you.” Like hell she would. He would bet his savings that she would come up with some lame excuse and continue avoiding him.
“Angel, would you be sure to put me on Lynn’s schedule sometime today? It’s very important that we get a few things taken care of.” He used a stern, but professional tone. The one that told Angel there was only one answer he would accept, and there would be no questions. He knew that he had a reputation for being the most unpleasant attorney in the office. Before today it had bothered him, but now it would work in his favor.
“Sure thing.” She quickly pulled out her Blackberry.
As the elevator doors slid open, Angel quickly exited the car. No doubt she would make room for him in Lynn’s schedule. He quickly blocked Lynn’s exit out of the elevator and hit the button to the lobby. Fuck waiting. He had just bought himself four minutes.
“Eric. What the hell are you doing?” He turned and crowded her against the back wall of the elevator.
“You’re avoiding me.”
“No. I’ve been busy.” She looked down as she spoke to him, refusing to make eye contact. He sat their breakfast and his briefcase down at their feet. He caged her in by placing his hands on the wall just above her shoulders.
“You’re lying to me, Lynn, and you know it. At least tell me where I fucked up so I can fix it. Please just tell me. I couldn’t live with myself if I hurt you.” She still wouldn’t meet his gaze.
“Don’t run from me baby, let me fix this.” She finally met his gaze. He was standing close enough that he could smell the vanilla scent of her body wash. That was the same body wash that he had rubbed all over her after taking her in the shower, her body still limp from another orgasm. He fought to control the beast awakening inside of him.
“I’m not running…I’m just…”
“I’m sorry I pushed you so hard.”
“Eric please, don’t do this here.”
“Trust me I don’t want to do it here anymore then you do. But this is the only option you’ve given me.” She was looking up at him, pleading for some type of mercy. She was a professional; she never wanted any of this. Mixing business and pleasure wasn’t her thing, and she had warned him. He had chosen to ignore that warning, because he knew she wanted more. He needed to taste her again.
He made the slow descent to her lips, giving her time to push him away or tell him to stop. She stared back at his lips expectantly, and it was the only permission he needed. He took her mouth in a slow, stimulating kiss. Once she came to her senses he would be in hot water, but right then all that mattered was that she was kissing him back with just as much need. She placed her hands on his neck, hauling him in closer. He knew at that moment that if she didn’t stop him he would take her against the elevator wall.
Grabbing the hem of her pin stripe skirt he pulled it up and over her hips. His hands met her bare ass; she was wearing a thong. His dick instantly turned to steel.
“Eric please!” She had him in a death grip as her right leg found its way up the side of his left. She rubbed her warm, silk-covered middle against the bulge in front of his work slacks. He had to stop this. As much as he wanted to take her right then and there, he knew she would regret it in the end and hate him for it.
Pushing her leg back down and pulling her skirt back into place he slowed the kiss down and murmured against her full lips. “I’m sorry baby. As much as I want you right now. We can’t do this here.” He nibbled and sucked on her bottom lip. It was hard trying to be a gentleman when she continued rubbing up against him like that. Knowing that she still wanted him so badly made him happy as hell.
“Yes. God, please, I need…” The loud ringing of her Blackberry made them jump apart like two teenagers being caught under the bleachers. She pushed against his chest to gain even more distance. He wasn’t stupid, so he moved away because he knew what was coming and yet he didn’t regret any of it. She looked flustered, well-kissed, and almost-fucked.
“Oh no!” She rubbed her palms over her face. “What the hell is wrong with me?” She was obviously shaken up. She still wanted him and there was no denying it now.
“Lynn it’s okay we didn’t do anything wr…” Her phone went off again. He wanted to break the damn phone. Who the fuck was calling her? What the fuck was so important that they needed to call back to back? She reached in her pocket to pull it out.
“Hello. Oh! Hey girl… yeah…. I just had to meet with Mike about a few things. I’ll be there shortly.” She was lying about being with him. It felt like a slap in the face, but he knew she wasn’t thinking correctly at the moment, so he let it slide. She hung up with Angel and hit the button to take them back to their floor. They rode up in silence.
“Lynn please talk to me, we can’t just ignore this.”
“At work we can.” She kept her eyes on the doors as she spoke in clipped tones. He knew that the second they opened she would run from him again.
“And outside of work? Are you saying tonight I can come over and we can talk about this like adults?”
He knew if he saw the inside of her condo again he would only be interested in one thing, and it would not be talking.
“I have plans.”
“That’s what I thought. I’ll be in your office at five. We can talk then.”
“Come at ten.” He wouldn’t be one of her appointments, and he wouldn’t be rushed.
“Five, Lynn. No questions. I’ve been patient. If you’re not there I’ll be at your condo at eight.” He took her sandwich out of the bag and handed it to her. “This is your breakfast.”
“You can’t just do this. I need time.” She made no move to grab her sandwich. The beep overhead alerted them of their arrival back to their floor. The doors slid open.
He spoke through his teeth. “And I needed to see you this weekend.” He held out the sandwich again. “Please take the sandwich. You need to eat.” She finally took it.
He exhaled nosily and made his way out of the elevator in front of her. “I’ll see you this afternoon.” He hated that he had to act like an ass to get a minute of her time, but he was serious when he told her he wouldn’t let her go.
“Soooo, the funniest thing happened while you were meeting with Mike a little while ago.”
Angel eyed Lynn as she walked past her desk and into her office. Lynn had fought hard for the beautiful Seattle backdrop behind her desk. It was a very refreshing site first thing in the morning, and Lynn wasn’t in the mood for any of her assistant’s office gossip this morning. She had more than enough drama in her own life at the moment, but this was part of their morning ritual, and acting like she didn’t care would only make Angel suspicious.
“Oh yeah? What’s that?” She threw the question over her shoulder nonchalantly and placed her briefcase and the breakfast sandwich on her desk. No doubt Angel would follow her in. Every morning they started the day in her office with a cup of coffee as they went over her schedule and reviewed the latest office gossip.
Angel had started working for Lynn as a temp, and Lynn kept her because she reminded her of Sade. It was like having a clone of her best friend at work. The difference was Angel couldn’t get away with half the stuff Sade did.
Dramatically clearing her throat, Angel smirked and started talking.
“Well the same Mike you said you were with was standing at my desk when I called you. See, he was the reason I called. He needed to go over a few things in the Jackson case. This would be the same Jackson case that Eric was talking about. Isn’t that a coincidence?” She stared at Lynn knowingly. Nothing got past Angel. If there was any gossip to be known in the office, Angel knew it first.
“He must have thought about it after I left his office,” Lynn lied, knowing it would do no good.
“Oh, okay, so we gonna play it that way? You know I’ll figure it out eventually Lynn. Fess up.” She stared at Lynn. It was her “tell me because I’m not backing down” stare.
“Close the damn door.” Lynn plopped down in her oversized leather office chair as Angel nearly skipped to the door of Lynn’s office and slid it shut.
“You gave him the cookie didn’t you?” Angel said before returning to the chair across from Lynn. Leave it to Angel to call it that.
“The what?” She knew what Angel meant.
“Don’t play stupid with me. Did you or did you not get jungle fever?”
Behind closed doors, Angel’s ghetto side always seemed to leak out, as if she had no control over it. She grew up in Houston, Texas and had followed her boyfriend of three years to Seattle. It turns out that her boyfriend had followed his lover to the Emerald City. Angel never talked about it and never dated again. That was a year ago, and a huge part of the reason she was so nosy. She needed to get herself a life. Lynn was beginning to worry about her.
“We just kissed.”
“I’m not talking about what just happened in the elevator. I could have told you that. Most of your lipstick is gone, and I hope Eric realizes it before people start a rumor that he’s a cross dresser. I want to know what the hell happened that had him waiting by the phone all weekend, and you avoiding his calls.”
She was too observant.
“Shit happened. Lots and lots of shit happened.” Angel looked down at the sandwich on her desk. He had brought her breakfast anyway.
“Okay so answer me this. Are you still a virgin?” This was Angel, getting straight to the point.
Lynn laid her head against the cool surface next to her sandwich. She could still feel his kiss from minutes before. Her whole body wanted him again, and again, and, lord help her, again.
“Did he force you?” Lynn’s head shot off the desk as she stared across at her nosy assistant.
“What?! God no. Why the hell would you think something like that Angel?”
“Well you’re sitting there looking all depressed and what not. So, I’m assuming you were either forced or it was no good.” Something Sade had already pointed out.
“Why do you and Sade keep saying that? No. I was not forced, and no he wasn’t bad. In fact, he was really, really good. It’s just complicated. So stop with all that crap already.”
“Then you stop looking like somebody stole your puppy. We should be out celebrating dammit!”
Lynn knew what was coming before Angel said it.
“Tonight we are going to have drinks.” It was Angel’s answer to everything. You got a new job? Let’s go have drinks. Your ex left you? Let’s go have drinks. You lost your virginity? Let’s go have drinks. The girl needed a new hobby.
“It’s Monday. Who in the hell goes out drinking on a Monday night?”
“We do, and don’t even try to say no. I’m calling Sade as soon as I get back to my desk.” They would double-team her until she gave in. Lynn wasn’t a big drinker, but the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to.
“Call her, and give me the time and place. I’ll meet you there.”
“Nice try, but we’ll pick you up. You’re not going to get out of it this time.” Lynn would never live down the one time she chose to stay home and cry on her couch over her no-good ex, Darius. With the deadbolt locked, she sat and listened to Sade and Angel bang on the door from the other side.
She hadn’t told Eric about Darius. So, he wouldn’t know that her ex was the reason for her commitment issues. It wasn’t fair to him, but she wouldn’t risk feeling that way again.
“I wasn’t trying to.”
“Whatever. Anyway, back to business. I put Eric down for ten thirty. Will that work?” Lynn thought about putting him off, and leaving for the day at three, but she knew he was serious. He would hunt her down until they talked, and they really needed to clear the air. She just needed to tell her body to behave.
Within seconds of seeing him in the elevator her body had gone on high alert. If he hadn’t slowed down and Angel hadn’t called she no doubt would have begged him until he took her in the elevator.
She had clearly lost her mind, throwing caution and professionalism to the wind. She needed to handle it once and for all. She wouldn’t let her hormones cost her a job.
“No need. We will be meeting in here this afternoon to deal with this.” She knew the look on her assistant’s face well.
“Oh yeah?” Angel smirked.
“No. We just need to talk, and since when do you know me to do something so unprofessional?”
“Since that long ride in the elevator. All I’m saying is that if his kiss got you that wound up, you’d better be careful, boss lady.” Who was she telling?
“Don’t you have work to do?” With another smirk, Angel rose from her chair and headed for the door.
Lynn knew this conversation wasn’t over. It was a good thing they would all be going out for drinks. Hopefully afterwards Angel and Sade would mind their own business.
Fat chance of that happening.
“Get out.” Rolling her eyes Lynn started to eat her sandwich alone, with thoughts of Eric running circles in her head.
At lunchtime Lynn looked up to see Angel carrying a large bouquet of roses into her office.
“Oooh, look whose getting flowers sent to them at work!” Angel had never said she was seeing anyone. Whoever he was had spent a lot of money. There were at least three dozen roses in the huge vase.
“These aren’t mine.” Angel spoke from behind the large arrangement. “They’re yours.”
Lynn jumped up from her chair and walked around her desk to help Angel place the flowers onto her own desk.
“Yep. The guy that delivered him them said your name specifically.”
Lynn looked around the arrangement until she found a small card stuck down in the center of them. She pulled back just as Angel went to grab it from her.
“I thought you said these were for me.”
“They are, but I like reading the cards.” Angel held her hand out.
Lynn pointed at the door. “Out.”
“Come on! It’s the least you can do after I strained my back carrying those things.”
“Goodbye Angel.” Lynn went to sit back down.
“You’re rude.” Angel gave a fake pout as she turned to leave.
Lynn waited for her to close the door. Her pulse sped up as she as she opened the envelope.
I’m sorry for the way I acted, please forgive me. I love you. – Eric
He sent her flowers at work. This would make it even harder to walk away from him. She had only ever received flowers twice in her life, and both times they were from Eric.
“What the hell am I supposed to do now?” Lynn spoke out loud to no one. She needed to end this, but he was making it hard, buying her flowers and apologizing. She took several deep breaths. This couldn’t happen. They worked together. It was that simple. Now she just had to convince herself.
Eric arrived at Lynn’s office ten minutes early. He met Angel on her way out. There was no way into Lynn’s office without passing her assistant first.
“Heading out for the day?”
“Yep.” Angel smirked. Why was she smirking at him?
“Okay have a good one.”
“Mmm hmm, you too.”
He never understood Angel. Then again, today was the most he had ever talked to her, though he had certainly heard her around the office. She was one of those people whose voice traveled. You could be anywhere in the office and hear her. He continued past Angel’s desk and into the open door to Lynn’s office.
She sat behind her oversize mahogany desk, obviously awaiting his arrival. She stared at him with no expression at all. He had no idea what her mood was, and that scared the hell out of him.
All day he worried about giving her too much time to think about them and where they would go from here. He knew she wasn’t okay with the fact that they worked together, and he would have to work hard to prove her wrong. The flowers were just the beginning. He noticed she had made a spot for them on her desk. He cleared the threshold and closed the door behind him.
“So, let’s talk.” She spoke first.
“Okay.” Feeling a little uneasy he had no idea where to start. It was unusual for a woman to lose her virginity and not cling to a man. She was the one pushing him away. Shouldn’t she be the one talking?
“Look Eric. We crossed a line we shouldn’t have the other night. You know it as well as I do. Let’s just put this all behind us and …”
“No.” On the other hand, maybe he should do all the talking. She wasn’t just going to toss him out like leftovers.
“Eric please, don’t make this harder than it should be.”
“The answer is no Lynn. You’re just scared. I still don’t understand why, but I would hope that one day you would trust me enough to tell me what I’m up against here.” He took the seat across from her. “Let’s just talk this out. You tell me what scares you and we will talk through it, but I’m not going to just blindly let you run from this.”
“I’m not scared of anything. I just feel that this is inappropriate.” Her clipped tone told him he had touched a nerve. Once again, she wouldn’t meet his gaze.
“You’re a horrible liar Lynn. Look at me.”
“Eric, I don’t have time for this.” She still wouldn’t look at him. She began toying with the large bouquet, moving the roses around absentmindedly.
“Do you like them?”
“Yes, they’re very beautiful. Thank you.”
“You know I meant what I said the other night. You deserve to be treated like the goddess you are. I want to be able to spoil you.”
She continued staring at the roses, refusing to look at him.
He rose from the chair and made his way around her massive desk; it was just another barrier she attempted to use against him.
Grabbing the top of her over-sized leather chair he turned her to face him. He kneeled down at her feet and looked up at her.
“Look at me Lynn. Not at the wall or the door or the flowers. Look at me. You want to convince me that you don’t want this, but you can’t look me in the eye. So do it. Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t want this to work.”
He prayed she wouldn’t do it. There was no getting over her. She’d only been in his life for a few months, and in those months, she had come to mean so much more to him than his ex-wife ever had. She understood him like no one else. Now all he had to do was figure her out.
When she finally began to lower her eyes he became worried, until she looked past his face and directed her eyes to his shoulder. She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t look him in the eyes, and that gave him hope.
“We can’t do this.”
“I can do this just fine. I love you. I know you think this is too soon, but I’ve had more than enough time to come to terms with it.” There it was. All laid out so that she couldn’t ignore it. He loved her.
He watched the pulse in her neck beat as she inhaled, and then exhaled deeply. She closed her eyes and did it again. Nothing good could come of giving her time to think about it. She would just overthink it, and they would be back at square one.
He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her to the edge of her chair until his stomach met the warmth between her legs. Her eyes shot open when he reached for her nape with his other hand, bringing her down for a kiss. She melted right into him. He put everything he had into the kiss. He was well aware that this wasn’t the time or place, but it may have been his last chance. He nipped at her bottom lip before sucking it into his mouth.
“What do you want from me?” She moaned against his lips.
“Everything. I want all of you Lynn.” He spoke through the kiss. It was the truth. He wanted all of her. Every piece she would let him have. He could smell her arousal, and it was the sweetest smell he had ever smelled. She spread herself wider giving him better access as his tongue found her neck.
“I can’t give you that,” She groaned out. They would talk about that later, but right now he needed her badly. “Oh, Eric I need you again.” The entire office was now closed, but it was better safe than sorry. He went to lock the door, hating the small distance he put between them. He was back with her in an instant.
“Come here baby.” She stepped into his embrace and another fiery kiss. He wouldn’t be stopped this time, no matter who called. He had been a gentleman in the elevator, knowing that at any minute someone could walk in, but they weren’t in the elevator anymore, and he certainly wasn’t a saint.
He found himself for the second time that day reaching under the hem of Lynn’s skirt. Her thighs felt amazing as he slid his hands up to her waist. She moaned into his lips when his hands found her bare ass and squeezed.
“I am not stopping this time Lynn. This is your last chance.”
“Please don’t stop.” It was all the permission he needed. He hoisted her onto her desk.
“Open up wider for me baby.” She did as he asked. The smell of her arousal hit him, and his erection, hard. He could feel her heat even before he reached the silk triangle between her legs. He pulled the damp material away from her dark curls and ripped it.
“Sorry baby, they were in the way. I promise I’ll replace them.” Nothing would stand in the way of him getting inside of her again. They both reached for his belt buckle at the same time. She took control.
“Hurry baby.” He pleaded. She made quick work of his zipper and pushed at his slacks. Using his own saliva as lubrication he stroked himself once before slowly entering her warm heat. She whimpered in pleasure.
Heaven. It was the first thought that had crossed his mind, as he stood, frozen in his own personal paradise. He soaked in the moment because he had thought would never happen again. Her arms circled his neck as she pulled him down for another kiss, and he began to drive into her.
If someone had told him a week ago he would be having sex at the office, he wouldn’t have believed them. This was so out of the ordinary for the both of them. He was a lawyer, for Christ’s sake. This screamed a sexual harassment suit, and God help him he didn’t care. It would be worth every fucking penny.
“Yes Eric! Please!” Her thighs squeezed his hips as she met him thrust for thrust. She was so responsive and he loved that about her. Luckily for them everyone had already left for the day. This had office gossip written all over it. He knew that if he changed the speed of his strokes and took her harder she would scream uncontrollably, to hell with where they were.
“God, you feel good.” His balls began ascend into his body. He knew he wouldn’t last long. He had waited all weekend for this. Reaching down, he rubbed her clit in sharp circles, and continued his thrust.
“You want to come baby?”
“Yes! Please yes!” Once again, he had her trapped. Gripping her braids into his fist, he pulled her head back. Forcing her to meet his gaze.
“Tell me that you want this. That you want us.” He was trying his best to hold off his climax.
“Eric, please!” She stared back at him, desperate for release.
“Say it and I’ll let you.” He sped up and began to ram into her sweet spot. “Say it baby, and it’s yours.” He pounded into her relentlessly.
“Yes, I want it. I want all of it! Ahhh, Eric!” She scratched at his dress shirt as her orgasm took over her body. Her scream sent a wave of arousal through his body, pushing him over the edge behind her.
“Fuck yes!” He growled out his release letting the pleasure roll through each of his nerve endings. His body shook as his lips found hers in a hard kiss. With a slow, shallow thrust he brought them both back to reality. They were in her office, on her desk, with the entire city of Seattle as their backdrop. At this rate they were going to kill each other.
She laid her head against his chest as she fought to catch her breath. “We’re in my office Eric.” She gasped out between shallow breaths. “We are in my office and we just had sex on my desk.” Her forehead remained in the center of his chest as she shifted her head from side to side. “This is not us. We don’t do things like this.”
He didn’t mention the fact that once again they hadn’t used a condom. She would remember it soon enough. They had no control around each other. How had they gone for so long without ripping each other’s clothes off?
Exhaling roughly, he placed his chin on the crown of her head. “I know, and lately it seems unavoidable.”
“I need time.” He knew the ambiance of the last few minutes had now taken a leave of absence.
“How much?” She definitely wanted him. The last few minutes had proved it.
“I don’t know.” She murmured. He lost track of time as they remained motionless in their position, with no sound except for the ticking of her office clock. Then he gently kissed the crown of her head and eased himself out of her warm tunnel. She finally lifted her head as he began to redress.
“You’re upset?” Why would he be? He couldn’t make her love him, but he was a patient man. Even if waiting would drive him crazy.
“No. I told you I love you, and if time is what you need I’ll give it to you. I don’t want to scare you away.” She gave him an appreciative smile as she slid off of her desk. Reaching under her skirt she bent to remove her torn underwear. Snatching them from her, Eric tucked them in the front pocket of his slacks, smiling.
“You’re something else, Mr. Scott.” Lynn shook her head with a half-smile as she righted her skirt.
“And you’re very hard to figure out, Ms. Wills.” He wanted to say more, but he wouldn’t push her. “I’ll get out of your way now so you can umm…” He pointed at her hair . Her once neat, braided up-do was completely ruined.
She pulled a small mirror from her desk drawer and took a look. Her eyes widened with disbelief. Now she looked well-fucked.
“Aww man, Eric. Seriously?!” She turned her head back and forth to get better look at her braids in the mirror.
“I’m sorry about that, but they were in the way,” he said with a grin.
“I’m sure they were.” She smiled up at him. This was the Lynn he wanted. The happy Lynn that was comfortable in his presence.
“Let me come over tonight. We still have more to talk about.” He needed more of her without any of the barriers. He knew he shouldn’t have pushed, but he hadn’t even had a chance to taste her again.
“Sorry, but I’m going out.” Jealousy charged through Eric’s body like lightening. If she hadn’t ignored him all weekend he could have taken her out. He counted to ten before he spoke.
“With who?” He had no right to ask, and it would probably just piss her off. After all, just because he had professed his love for her didn’t mean he had a right to know her whereabouts. She wasn’t even sure of her feelings for him, and she sure as hell hadn’t expressed any undying love. Well, technically she had, during sex, but he was pretty sure it was involuntary.
“Calm down boy,” she snorted. “It’s a girl’s night with Angel and Sade.” He wanted to ask if Sade was who she had been with all weekend, but he held his tongue. Bringing up the past would only prevent them from moving forward.
“I’m sorry. I know I had no right to ask that.” But he wanted that right.
“I’ll forgive you this time.” She smiled at him. “But now I need you to go so that I can make myself presentable.”
He didn’t want to leave, but he knew he had too. He pulled her close for one last kiss that seemed to accelerate right away. She quickly broke their embrace.
“Time Eric…” She sighed.
“I know. I’m sorry.” He kissed her forehead one last time and then turned to leave her office. Time. He was beginning to hate the word.
Closing the door behind him, he was shocked to find Angel sitting at her desk. How long had she been there, and what all had she heard? The look on her face said everything.
“Oh, hey Angel. You’re still here.” He spoke nonchalantly.
“Never left.” She knew and she wanted him to know it. He could hear the gossip mill begin to churn.
“Don’t look at me like that,” she said. “I know not to repeat today’s events to anyone else. She is my friend, you idiot.” He let out a breath that he hadn’t known he was holding in. “But you should know that if you screw her over I will take it personally. Do you understand?”
She was threatening him. A lawyer.
“Yes, and you should know that I don’t intend to. I love her. She just needs time.”
“Mm hmmm.” Angel rolled her eyes.
“Have a fun girl’s night.”
She never looked up again. He shook his head and smiled as he walked down the hall and back to his office to grab his briefcase. No one could wipe the smile from his face, not even a protective threat from Lynn’s assistant. He thought back to Lynn melting in his arms when he brought her to climax. Nope. No one could ruin his day.
“To Lynn’s cookie!”
Lynn ignored Angel’s pun as she threw back a shot of tequila. She felt the familiar burn travel down her throat. Licking the glass rim’s salt, she squeezed her eyes shut as she sucked on a lime. Slamming the shot glass onto the tabletop, she looked up to see that Sade and Angel had finished their shots as well.
“Damn, that burned.”
“The first one always does. Eventually, you don’t feel anything,” said Angel.
“That’s because you’re too fucked up to feel it,” Sade laughed out.
“You may have a point,” Angel chuckled. They sat in a booth at Lucky’s, a popular bar only 15 minutes from Lynn’s condo. The walls were filled with horse shoes of all sizes.
“So, boss lady you going to tell us about your meeting after work today or do you need more alcohol first.”
Lynn could have smacked the hell out of Angel for opening her big mouth. She hadn’t gotten a chance to tell Sade about the incident with Eric in her office. Well, it could hardly be called an “incident,” but she definitely wasn’t ready to deal with her best friend’s reaction.
“What about after work?” Sade’s eyes focused on Lynn. Lynn would definitely need another drink now.
She quickly stopped their waiter as he sauntered past their booth. “Can I please get another one of those shots?”
“Make that three.” Lynn gave Angel her best death stare across the table. The waiter took their orders and walked off to the bar.
“Lynn. What did you do after work?” Here it was. The moment of truth.
Exhaling heavily, Lynn spoke. “I may have had sex with Eric again.”
“You may have or you had?” Oh, she definitely had, for all of Seattle to see at that. They had been so hungry for each other that they hadn’t even used their basic common sense and closed the blinds. And to think they both had college degrees. Lynn laid her head on the table as she felt the effects of the first shot roll in. She really didn’t want to hear another lecture from her best friend.
“Angel? Did she, or didn’t she?” Let big-mouth Angel answer.
“Uh uh, girl. That’s her story to tell.” Oh, now she had nothing to say.
“Lynn, I swear to God if you don’t get your head off that nasty ass table and say something I….” The waiter arrived with their shots, cutting off Sade’s threat. She was probably just going to threaten to slap her. It was her usual threat, but she never really meant anything by it. Then again, Lynn had never done something so stupid. She had sex in her office. Sade may just slap her this time for real.
“Ugh.” She lifted her head off the table and grabbed her next shot.
As the waiter walked away, Sade stared bullets in her direction. “Don’t play with me Lynn.”
Lynn threw her second shot to the back and let it burn its way down her throat. After going through the motions again she took a deep breath.
“Yes. I had sex with Eric again, okay? It’s no big deal.” Sade knew it was a lie and she no doubt would call Lynn out.
“No big deal, huh?” Here it comes. “Just like it was no big deal, when you took over my guest room this past weekend. Huh?” This was only the beginning. Sade didn’t believe in small talk. “Do we need to go and get your head checked? You either want him or you don’t Lynn. Don’t drag the poor fool along by his dick.”
“I’m not dragging him along, Day.” Now that she said it out loud she began to feel some guilt. She was sure it was just the tequila. She had made rules, which he decided not to follow. So technically he had brought this all on himself.
“At least tell me you used a condom this time.” Lynn’s head hit the table again this time with an audible thud. She realized their mistake the second he walked out of her office, but she suspected he was well aware of what they had done.
“Dammit Lynn! What are y’all, teenagers?” Her best friend sounded agitated. “Do I have to have the birds and bees talk with you?”
“No Sade. Just drop it okay.” Lynn spoke into the table. She didn’t want to talk about it.
“Hold up. Wait a minute.” Angel had obviously caught on to Sade’s rant. “Am I hearing this right? Are you telling me y’all didn’t use a condom the first time y’all had sex?”
“Drop it, Angel.”
“Oh no, you heard me right,” Sade said. “They didn’t use a condom the first, second, third or the fourth time. Acting like two damn rabbits.” Eric definitely had the stamina of the Energizer bunny, thought Lynn.
“Why the hell didn’t they use condoms? Don’t most men keep those things in their wallet?” Angel was talking to Sade, completely dismissing Lynn from their conversation about her love life.
“’Cause he all of a sudden ‘loves’ her and wants to get her pregnant and have beautiful mixed babies. He’s acting like it’s a fucking science project or something.” Lynn watched them interact as if she weren’t at the table.
Two peas in a pod.
“Well, you know what they: once you go black…”
“What do they say about once you go crazy? Because that’s what happened. She’s scared to commit to him, but she keeps sleeping with him unprotected. How much sense does that make?”
“None.” Angel answered Sade’s question as Lynn reached across the table and stole her shot. Neither of them even noticed. Lynn threw back the third shot and skipped the lime and salt. The burn was gone.
“Where the hell were you while they were in her office doing the nasty?”
“Sitting at my desk.” Angel now had Lynn’s full attention, even though the shots had kicked in.
“What the hell do you mean you were sitting at your desk?”
“I was sitting at my desk, like I always do. You forget I’m on an assistant’s salary. I don’t have one of those fancy college degrees like you two do. If you didn’t want me there, you shouldn’t have loaded me up with so much work to do.”
Lynn now felt guilty. Angel was in the middle of her junior year in college when she caught her ex Michael cheating on her. He was her primary provider. When she left him, Angel could no longer afford school, so she dropped out. It had taken her months to get back on her feet. Lynn respected her for not staying with him because of the money.
The vibration from her cell phone brought her back to the present. Reaching into the front pocket of her jeans, she pulled it out. Her body temperature went up a notch just from reading the text. It was from Eric.
7:45pm – I want to see you tonight.
She quickly responded.
7:45pm – Sorry can’t. Girls night, remember?
“Who are you texting on a Monday night?” Sade watched her from across the table.
“Nobody, I was just looking at the time.” She lied. Her friend wasn’t stupid. She knew who it was.
“Why, you got a hot date?” Sade was evidently still unhappy with her. She was such a mother hen.
“Oh, stop it, Day.” She needed a little privacy. Rising from the bar stool she excused herself. “I have to go pee.”
Sliding her phone back into her pocket, Lynn took a step and her head began to swim. She leaned on the table for support in her tipsy state.
“That’s what you get for stealing my shot. You can’t even stand up straight, look at you.” Angel laughed at her from across the table.
“Fuck you.” Lynn slurred while everything around her seemed to sway.
After gaining her balance she proceeded in the direction of the lady’s room. She would definitely feel those shots in the morning. Her phone buzzed again as she entered the restroom. She made her way in the stall furthest from the door, tumbled in, and sat on the closed toilet seat. Pulling her phone from her pocket she read Eric’s next message.
7:47pm – Then let me see you afterwards.
7:47pm – That’s a bad idea I’m pretty sure I’m drunk or at least getting there. I won’t be good company.
7:48pm – I don’t want you to be good.
Her body went on full alert. The alcohol in her told her to ditch her friends and go home. That was impossible because Sade had driven them to the bar. She doubted her friend would be happy if she cut their girl time short for Eric. Her body told her to give in, but the last sober part of her brain said to forego Eric.
7:50pm – Though that sounds amazing, I am going to have to decline. I will see you at work tomorrow =-)
Pleased with her restraint she hit send and slid the cell phone back in her pocket.
Take that, you sexy bastard.
Standing up she once again attempted to gain some sense of balance. As she exited the stall her cellphone vibrated continuously in her pocket again. He was calling. Well crap, she hadn’t planned on talking to him. She stared at the screen indecisively until the vibrating stopped. Exhaling with relief she paced over to the vanity. The vibration returned with a vengeance. She quickly hit the accept button.
“Hello?” she hissed.
“Let me come over.” His husky voice sent a shock straight to her pussy.
“I need to taste you again Lynn.” Well hell how was she supposed to say “no” to that? She wouldn’t let the tequila win. She had to do something.
“I don’t know what time we’re leaving,” she lied.
“Doesn’t matter. I want to see you.”
“Eric ,this is not ‘giving me time.’” The line grew silent. She could hear him breathing. She silently begged her body to behave.
She heard him exhale loudly. “I really didn’t want to do this, but… desperate times…”
“Do what?” She said nervously. What the hell was he up to?
“I got Angel’s phone number from the employee directory. What do you think would happen if I called her right now?” She wasn’t an angry person normally, but she was seeing red at the moment. How dare he? “You think her and your other friend would be happy to know you called me from the bathroom on your girls’ night?”
“I didn’t call you. You called me!”
“They don’t know that.”
If he called Angel then Lynn would never live this down, and Sade would have a fit. He had trapped her again. She wanted to slap the smirk, that she was sure would be in place, off of his face.
“Are you trying to blackmail me?”
“Of course not. I’m just trying to taste you again, and I’m a desperate man, Lynn.” He knew just what to say. Unfortunately for him, he picked the wrong woman to play poker with.
“Am I?” His rough voice was beginning to excite her.
Why had she taken so many shots? She had to get back to the table. She had been gone too long. Sade would eventually come looking for her.
“I have to go.”
“Are you wet Lynn?” He rasped.
“I have to go.”
“I bet you are. You want me to lick you right now, don’t you? I know you’re thinking about it.”
“Goodbye Eric.” She disconnected the call and powered off her phone. He wasn’t even in the vicinity and yet her body could feel him everywhere. Taking one last look in the mirror she left the bathroom and headed back to her friends.
As she approached the table she saw Angel on her phone. Their gazes met and she knew Eric had made good on his promise.
The rat bastard.
“Sure thing. We’ll be sure to get her home safely. Yeah, she’s had a few.” Angel laughed loudly at something he said. “You fool…. Ok.. Ok.. See you tomorrow… bye bye.” Angel grinned across the table.
“What’s so funny?”
Sade turned to look at Lynn. She was going to kill him. If he thought she would agree to see him after this stunt he was mistaken.
“What?” Lynn refused to meet Sade’s gaze. Instead she looked around the bar for their waiter. She might as well have another, since she wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon. She grabbed his attention from across the bar and signaled him over.
“Ah ah ah, Boss lady. Eric seems to think you’ve already had too much based on the phone call you made from the bathroom.”
“What?!” Sade yelled stunned. “You called him!”
“He called me.” She calmly corrected. Not that it mattered.
“Only because he wouldn’t stop calling and texting me. The only reason he called Angel was because I refused to let him come over later.” She looked at the traitor across the table as the waiter arrived. “Two more please.”
“Give me your phone.” Sade laid her hand on the table palm up in front of her.
“If he was the one to make the first call, prove it. Give me the phone.”
“Fine.” Lynn handed her phone over to Sade and watched as she powered it back on. She watched her maneuver through it and stop to read the screen.
“You see? I told you.” She sounded like a tattling toddler.
“So you did.” She looked up at Lynn and shook her head. “Girl, you’re in trouble. He’s got it bad.”
The waiter arrived with her order. Without hesitation she threw back another shot, again skipping the salt. Her friendship with Sade had become strained because, unlike Lynn, Sade saw past Darius and his fakeness. She knew she was screwed if Sade agreed.
“Getting drunk won’t help you, and I sure as hell am not packing your ass into the office tomorrow.” Lynn rolled her eyes at Angel.
“Angel’s right.” Sade slid the second shot away from her. “Getting drunk will not help you, and you know you can’t handle your alcohol.”
“He wants too much from me.” She finally admitted. “He wants commitment and love and everything I can’t give him.” Her head met the table again as her eyes began to water. She really shouldn’t have taken that last shot.
She felt Sade’s hand rub across her back. “It’ll be alright. Don’t think about it right now honey, you’re drunk.”
“I’m not.” She felt fatigue began to settle as the repetitive motion of Sade’s back rub began to soothe her.
Lynn heard Angel giggle and Sade yell for the check right before she passed out.
He stood at the foot of her bed, lazily stroking his erection. His nostrils flared and his eyes were filled with a mixture of hunger and greed.
That’s what he looked like. Here to take what he wanted without showing mercy.
“Open your legs Lynn; let me see your pretty pussy.”
She hesitated. What was he doing here? She couldn’t remember letting him in. His hair was wet and his clothes were gone. Looking down her body she realized she had been stripped as well. Her hesitation must have irritated him.
“Open. Your. Legs.” he ordered.
She did as she was told. His eyes moved over her skin, making her feel incredibly exposed. She went to close her legs.
“Don’t.” She obeyed his command.
“Good girl. Now spread your lips open with your fingers. I want to see all of it.” The grip on his erection tightened as his strokes continued.
He moved closer, and the muscles in his shoulders bunched while his green eyes glowed. He slowly crawled on to the end of the bed, stalking her like a predator would its prey. His gaze remained on her middle. Placing his hands on the inside of her knees, he stretched her wider, his touch singeing her skin. He tilted his head back and closed his eyes as he inhaled deeply and exhaled with an “Ahh.” Her body responded intensely, and he hadn’t even touched her yet.
“What do you want from me?” She asked him.
He opened his eyes, licking his top lip. Finally, his eyes met hers. She felt his gaze pierce her soul as he finished his journey up her body and aligned himself at her wet opening.
With his lips only a whisper away from hers he hissed, “Everything,” right before he plunged deep into her.
Lynn’s eyes snapped open to meet the piercing sunlight from her bedroom window.
She slapped a hand over her eyes; her head felt like someone had hit her over it with a hammer. Her mouth tasted like cotton, and her eyes felt swollen. The night before came rushing in, spoiling her deliciously wet dream. She drank way too much.
Fuck you, tequila.
“Ugh.” Rolling onto her side, Lynn allowed the morning sun to hit her face.
Then reality hit her. What time was it?
“Shit, shit, shit!”
Looking at the clock, she grimaced. She was already two hours late. She was never late. Why hadn’t her alarm gone off? Looking over to the nightstand, she stared accusingly at the overpriced electronic. Jumping from the bed she ran to her closet.
Fuck you, Brookstone.
She froze mid-step as she heard the doorbell ring. Someone was at the door. It was probably the police coming to check on her welfare. No doubt Angel would send them to find her. She couldn’t wait to get her hands on her traitorous assistant.
Fuck you, Angel.
She frowned as she looked down at her clothes. She was still wearing the same clothes from the night before, except her shoes were gone. Who needed enemies when you had friends who wouldn’t even put you to bed properly? She couldn’t even remember leaving the bar, but it didn’t matter ,because Angel would be sure to tell her all about it later.
Walking into her bathroom, Lynn examined her reflection in the mirror. She looked like shit. Her hair was a mess, her eyes puffy, and her skin oily. She brought her palm to her mouth to do a breath check. The smell was horrible. She needed a shower pronto.
She heard the doorbell ring out again, reminding her that she had a visitor waiting on her front stoop. Whoever was at her door would pay for being so damn loud so early in the morning.
The banging continued as she made her way down the stairs and to the front of her condo, “I’m coming! Just wait a damn minute.”
Her visitor must have a death wish because they kept right on knocking. Quickly unlocking the door, she jerked it open, “What the hell is…”
Her words caught in her throat as she faced the star of her wet dream. Her pussy clenched as a sense of déjà vu fell over her. Eric stood there, staring back at her with a knowing smirk on his face. He had two cups of coffee in one hand and the other poised to knock again. Wearing a sleeveless t-shirt, basketball shorts and a pair of expensive running shoes, he looked good even when he dressed down, dammit.
“Good morning, sleepy head.” He smirked at her. Maybe she had slept through the week. He was not at all dressed for work. In fact, she couldn’t remember ever seeing him dressed so casually.
“What day is it?” She snapped.
“Tuesday.” He grinned. She wanted to slap the grin from his face.
“That’s what I thought. I have to get ready for work.” She went to shut the door on him. He stuck his foot out to stop her.
“No, you don’t. Angel called in for you this morning. Something about you coming down with the flu.” His expression said that he knew better. “She thought I should come by and check on you.”
She stared at him from beneath her thick eyelashes. Her assistant had downright turned on her, which could only mean that her best friend had too.
She sure as hell felt sick now.
“You look like you could use this.” He handed her a cup of coffee. She stared at it for a millisecond, and then accepted it. She wasn’t a complete fool; her brain needed the coffee, especially with him around.
She tilted the cup and took a sip. The burst of flavor hit her tongue, making her sigh as the warm liquid slid down her throat. Closing her eyes, she savored it. He had gotten it just right.
“Oh God, I really needed that.” He cleared his throat, forcing her eyes open. She recognized the heat in his eyes for what it was. Knowing she had that type of power over him gave her an adrenaline rush, but she was in no mood to feed the lion this morning.
She reached for the doorknob, “Well, I’m sure you have better things to do today, so I won’t hold you.”
He made a show of looking down at his casual attire then looking back at her.
“Actually, I don’t. Here, hold this.” He handed her the other cup of coffee, and then bent to reach for something out of her view on the floor. Straightening up, he came up with two paper bags.
“What’s all that?” She was afraid to ask.
“Breakfast, snacks, movies… all the makings for a lazy day in.” He smiled as he lifted the bags and shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly, his delicious biceps bulging in the process. “Whatdaya say?”
She looked him over once more. There was no way she would survive an hour alone with him in her condo. This was a horrible idea.
“You bought all that for me?”
“For us.” She was afraid he would say that.
“Don’t.” He read her mind. “Don’t overthink it Lynn. I’m just trying to help. I promise to behave.” Yep it was definitely déjà vu.
She rolled her eyes and shook her head. “It’s not just you Eric, it’s us! We can’t seem to behave around each other.” She pointed back and forth between the two of them, spilling coffee in the process.
“Is that really a bad thing?”
She groaned out in frustration, “Yes! We want two different things, Eric! You want commitment and I… I….” she shook her head and growled in frustration.
“You want time.” He answered for her. “I told you I understand that, but does that mean we can no longer be friends?”
“No, but we probably shouldn’t be left alone. You fucked me on my desk yesterday for Christ’s sake!” Even now she wanted him to join her in the shower. What was wrong with her?!
“Okay, I know that wasn’t the smartest thing to do, but I just can’t seem to control myself around you. This will be perfect for us. We could use this as a test.” She didn’t like tests. She always failed tests. “We could hang out today and-”
“No Eric –
“Just hear me out please?” He pleaded. He was cute when he begged.
“Talk.” She took another sip of her coffee, or his. She wasn’t sure anymore. It didn’t matter; her brain needed it.
“Hang out with me today. I promise not to make a move on you, and if I do, you can kick me out.” It sounded reasonable, but what was the catch? “I promise not to touch you.”
“I’m still pissed at you for calling Angel last night,” she said.
“And I apologize. That was a pretty immature thing to do. It won’t happen again.” The look on his face told her he didn’t mean it.
He sounded sincere enough, but the fact that he thought he could spend an entire day with her and not touch bothered her. Somewhere in the back of her fucked up mind she wanted to take that as a challenge. He stood just outside the threshold, a sad puppy coming to mind when she looked at him. He waited patiently for permission to enter. Finally, she gave in.
“Come on in, and stop with the puppy dog eyes. They don’t work on me.” She rolled her eyes as he passed her, his smile beaming across his face. What had she just agreed to?
Why the hell would he agree to not touching her? He was an idiot, that’s why.
The second the words left his mouth, he knew it would be an almost impossible promise to keep, but he couldn’t think of any other way to get her to let him stay. Now he stood at her kitchen island, unloading the bags he’d brought along while she took her shower.
Knowing she was right down the hall, naked with hot soapy water streaming down her body, drove him mad. He could almost see the water running over every smooth dark curve. He had to get himself together if he was going to play in the ‘friend’ zone today.
When Angel called him to say Lynn wouldn’t make it into the office, he became worried that she was running again. It didn’t take long for him to realize her nosy assistant was playing matchmaker, which was fine with him, since it meant she wasn’t threatening him. Jumping at the opportunity to spend the day with Lynn, he took a personal holiday. Never mind that he was already in his office when he got the call. He rushed home to change, then went to the store for supplies .
He heard the water shut off as he placed their breakfast into the microwave to reheat it. Wanting to keep busy, he grabbed the stack of movies and went to find the DVD player Lynn had said he could find in the sitting room.
When he entered the room, he flipped the light switch on and froze in his tracks. He hadn’t had a chance to see this room the night of their dinner, probably because his brain was mush that night. The room was, in an essence, Lynn; it was dimly lit and had a modern deco-style, with all types of browns and beiges.
It even smelled like her.
There was a large, flat screen TV sitting on a mahogany stand, and right across from it was an oversized mocha-colored loveseat. On the floor in front of the loveseat lay a large and plush area rug. The love seat offered the only seating in the room, and it was big enough for two people to fuck on like rabbits. He was already picturing her body laid out for his pleasure on that plush rug.
She was right; this wasn’t going to work. He couldn’t be in this room and not think of all the ways he could fuck her in it. He had to leave.
“You ready to get lazy?” He turned as she walked up behind him, and he felt his dick spasm at the sight. She wore red running shorts and a white tank.
Her breasts did a gentle bounce with every step she took. She may as well have been naked; her nipples were outlined perfectly in the shirt. The beast inside of him roared, begging to be released. He wouldn’t torture himself. He couldn’t do this.
He had to say something.
“Umm,” he swallowed “I can’t aaaa…” He was thunderstruck, staring at her lips.
“You okay?” she seemed concerned.
“Yes!” He cleared his throat and shook his head. “Sorry, I lost my train of thought for a second. I’ll just go grab the food.” He spoke quickly as he handed her the movies on his way to the kitchen, carefully trying not to touch her.
In her kitchen, he took several deep breaths and placed his palms on the cool counter top, counting backwards from ten. He had to get his body under control. How was she supposed to believe him, if he couldn’t even convince himself that he wouldn’t touch her?
Get it together Eric.
He headed back to the sitting room with their food. He found her sitting with her legs crossed on one end of the loveseat, remote in hand.
She smiled at him as he entered. “You know, this was a great idea. I could really use a lazy day. I can’t remember the last time I took a day off.” She patted the spot next to her. “Come on and sit.”
Handing her a breakfast sandwich, Eric joined her. He wasn’t sure he would survive this lazy day.
But, so far, he was making good on his promise. Eric hadn’t touched Lynn at all. In fact, he hadn’t moved so much as a muscle in three hours. His hands rested on a throw pillow that sat on his lap, his fingers locked. He had taken a bathroom break after the first movie, and hadn’t moved since. His whole body seemed to tense up every time Lynn moved on the loveseat.
They had watched two romantic comedies and had chosen a thriller for the third. Well, she had chosen the thriller; he was okay with whatever she wanted to watch. She tried to start idle chats during the movies, but he didn’t respond much.
Whether he touched her or not, her body still reacted to his presence. She brought all of this on to herself, and now she was suffering for it. Even though he sat right next to her, she missed him. He was now walking on eggshells, trying not to touch her. She had to fix this.
She bounced on the loveseat as she turned to him. “So, you ready for the next movie or do you need a break?” His gaze fell on her breasts and then travelled quickly up to her face. She knew he hadn’t missed the fact that she had gone braless.
“Let’s keep going. I think we’ve gotten some good momentum.” His words sounded rigid, and his eyes were glued to hers. He was fighting not to look past her nose.
“Alrighty then.” She rose from the loveseat and headed over to the DVD player. Stopping half way, she executed a lengthy stretch. Placing her arms above her above her head, she arched her back, sending her breasts forward and her ass backward toward him.
Let the games begin.
“Geez, I feel like we’ve been sitting for forever.” She rolled her neck back and forth. Following this with a standing forward bend, she reached for the back of her knees, silently thanking her yoga instructor. She heard Eric’s quick intake of breath before she straightened. Finishing her walk over to the DVD player, she bent at the waist again to switch out the disc. She smiled at the feel of his gaze on her ass; her shorts rose higher than even she expected.
With the new disc in and ready to go, she turned back to him. His face was stiff as he stared past her at the blue illumination of the television screen.
“I’m going to grab a refill. Do you want anything?” It was a loaded question; her body burned with desire. She prayed that he took the bait, but she knew he wouldn’t. He was a man of his word, and if he said he wouldn’t touch her then he wouldn’t touch her.
“No, thanks. I’m good.” His smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. It would be up to her to make the first move.
She exhaled, “Okay, I’ll be right back.” At the door she turned to see his head fall back as he violently inhaled as if his life depended on it. His eyes squeezed shut and he clenched his jaw. He rubbed a palm over his face and pinched the bridge of his nose. Her adrenaline kicked into high gear.
It’s showtime, thought Lynn.
She walked past the kitchen and straight to her bedroom, quickly undressing. She dared him to ignore her this time. He was clearly on the edge; she would just give him a little nudge. She made her way back to the sitting room. His position hadn’t changed. Clearing her throat, she stood just inside the doorway and waited for him to notice her. It didn’t take long.
“Jesus Christ Lynn!” His hungry eyes seemed to burst from their sockets. They scanned up and down her naked body, stopping at the spot between her legs. She almost came when he stuck his tongue out, licking his lips.
“You sure you don’t want a refill?” Her words came out surprisingly raspy as she leaned against the door jam.
“I….” he seemed to be at a loss for words, “Fuck Lynn! You and all your surprises.” His voice shook as rubbed his hands over his face.
“Is that a ‘no’?”
“That depends.” His gaze leveled with hers. “Are you going to run afterwards? Because if so then I’ll pass. I need to know you want more than just the sex.”
It was a good question, and this time she was sure of the answer.
“No?” His face displayed disbelief.
“No. I won’t run from you anymore.”
He stared at her through skeptical eyes, “Promise me.”
“Sorry, not good enough.” He turned his eyes back to the television. “Let’s start the movie.”
He was good. Picking up the remote he pointed to the DVD player to start the movie, mouth set and pretending to ignore her.
“I promise I won’t run from you.” Weight lifted from Lynn’s shoulders as she realized that she was telling him the truth. She was tired of running from him. No one was winning in this game of cat and mouse that she kept playing.
He said he wouldn’t hurt her, and she would have to trust him. It was still hard knowing that she had given him what he wanted. On a good note, she now had his attention again.
“You see, that wasn’t so bad.”
Speak for yourself.
“Come here.” For the first time that afternoon, he moved the throw pillow from his lap. Her eyebrows shot up as she stared down at his shorts. She now understood why he refused to get up; there was no way he could hide his erection behind his basketball shorts. How long had he sat next to her fighting a hard on?
“Seriously?!” She asked as she walked closer, her eyes still on his lap. “You practically make me beg and you’re sitting there with that in your lap?”
His face reddened. “I promised I wouldn’t touch you. Don’t give me that crap. You, with your yoga poses. You’re just as guilty as I am. I just can’t hide mine.” He grabbed her waist and pulled her down to straddle his lap. He grabbed her elbows and forced her to look down into his eyes.
“No running?” He asked again. He wanted reassurance that she wouldn’t take off again. This was Eric. He never wanted to hurt her, and would always put her feelings first.
She had known she was in trouble the first time they had dinner. He made her feel and want things she hadn’t felt or wanted since Darius. She wasn’t sure she could open her heart to him the way she had with Darius. She had given Darius too much: too much trust, too much love, and too much time. Eric wanted more than just what was between her legs, and that scared her.
But she wanted him too.
He reached up to grab her face between his hands, pulling her down for a hunger-filled kiss. His tongue sunk into her mouth, slow dancing with hers. “You’re so fucking beautiful,” he mumbled.
She groaned as he took one of her beaded nipples into his mouth and sucked hard. She slowly rotated her hips on his covered erection making him groan out in pleasure. “I can smell your pussy. It misses me doesn’t it?”
“Maybe.” She smirked.
He squeezed her ass hard right before he slapped its round cheeks with his palms. “Smart ass.” He switched to her other nipple, nibbling on the sensitive peak. Her body vibrated with need.
Repositioning, he moved their bodies so that she laid spread before him on her plush area rug. “Just as I thought, you do look good on this rug.”
“So, you’ve thought about this?”
“From the moment I stepped into this room.” He ran his palms up her hips to her breasts and back again, stopping to tweak her nipples. “You should also know that before today is over, I’m going to bend you over that loveseat.”
“Oh, so you like my loveseat?” She grinned up at him.
“I love your loveseat, I love this room, and I love you.” His gaze roamed as he feathered his fingertips down her stomach until he reached her pubic hairs. He let his fingers graze through the coarse patch before gently tugging on a few hairs, sending a wave of excitement through her body.
“I love this too. Don’t ever get rid of it.” She nodded quickly in agreement. At the moment she would probably agree to anything he wanted. The man was excellent with his hands.
He rubbed his fingers back and forth between her folds, and a moan passed her lips.
“You let me starve last night.” He dipped a finger into her and she jumped, “That wasn’t nice Lynn.” He pulled his finger out and brought it to his mouth, sucking her juices off. It was the hottest thing she had ever seen.
“I don’t think you are. You teased me just minutes ago. How is bending over in front of me, and bouncing your tits, showing me that you’re sorry?” He dipped his finger back in. In and out it went, steadily.
“I…I d..don’t know.” She couldn’t form words. His thumb slid lazily over her clit.
He withdrew his finger and held it at her lips, “Taste it.” She sucked hard on his finger, flicking her tongue on the tip. He jerked his hand back quickly.
“You tease. I wish I had the strength to hold back and taste you but I don’t. I need to have you right now.” He reached back over to the loveseat for his wallet. Opening it he pulled something out.
“I’m sorry that I didn’t think about it before, but thinking is not one of my strong suits when you’re around.” She must have really lost it, because she felt a twinge of disappointment that he wanted to use it.
She watched as he pulled at the front of his shorts reaching in he pulled out his swollen erection. A drop of wetness lay at the eye of the enlarged head. Sighing he wrapped it in his fist, using his thumb to rub the drop away as he gave it a few long strokes. Curiosity got the best of her.
“Let me taste it.”
Bringing his thumb to her lips, he grinned down at her. She sucked the clear drop away. He quickly pulled his finger back again.
Using his teeth, he tore the foil packet open and removed the condom. She watched as he pinched the tip and rolled it on. Reaching down he lifted the hem of his shirt up and over his head, leaving his shorts on. His abs flexed with his every move. Dick in hand, he rubbed the head firmly over her clit causing her to moan out.
“You should probably go ahead and call in for tomorrow too. Now that I know you won’t run, I don’t think I’ll be able to help myself.”
“So, can you explain to me why your assistant threatened me with bodily harm yesterday?”
“What? When?” Lynn laughed out.
They lay there, naked, in the middle of the area rug with their limbs tangled after making love for the second time. Eric’s fingers lazily roamed up and down her arm as Lynn lay across his chest. If possible, the sex was more intense after she promised not to run from their relationship.
“Yesterday after we …” He cleared his throat, “I left your office She was sitting at her desk and she threatened me.” Lynn closed her eyes and smiled, remembering their office rendezvous.
It surprised her that he had seen Angel, and it didn’t seem to bother him that her assistant had witnessed their afternoon romp in the office. Angel had admitted to hanging around, but she hadn’t said anything about talking to him.
“You saw her after we…” Lynn cleared her throat instead of just stating the obvious.
“Say it.” He laughed out.
“No.” She slapped at his chest playfully. “You know what I’m trying to say. You saw her, and that didn’t bother you?”
“Why would it? The damage was already done. I definitely wasn’t going to apologize for it.” He had a point.
“But you’re changing the subject. Why is she so worried that I would hurt you? I feel like I’m missing something here.”
Her eyes remained closed as she tried to think of something to tell him other than the truth. She wasn’t ready for him to know so much. She knew it wasn’t fair, especially after her promise, but she had already taken a huge step.
“Lynn, look at me.” She did as he asked, praying that he would change the subject.
“I don’t know. Maybe she’s just worried about me getting hurt again.” Lynn squeezed her eyes shut again and cursed herself for the slip. She knew he would catch it. That was the problem with trying to keep a secret. They never wanted to be kept.
His fingers paused on her arm. “Again?”
“Look, just drop it okay. It’s in the past.” Lynn moved to sit up.
“Don’t.” He gently tugged her back down onto his chest. “Please just talk to me. You promised you wouldn’t run. This is running.”
She stared across the room at the now-blue television screen. “It’s not something I want to talk about Eric.” Everything had been going so well up until now. Darius always had a way of coming back and ruining something good for her.
“What was his name?”
“Please. I want to know what I’m up against. At least give me that.”
The sadness in his voice caused her heart to drop. She never wanted to discuss Darius with him. She didn’t want him to look at her like some battered women. She didn’t need his pity, but she did need to be fair with him.
“Darius,” she finally said.
“How bad was it?” he asked.
“Emotional or Physical?”
She watched as he covered his face with his hand and inhaled deeply. Here came the pity.
“Motherfucker.” Eric hissed through his teeth. It all made sense now. She was afraid. Some jackass had put his hands on her. It was no wonder why she was afraid to commit to him. If he ever laid eyes on the bastard, he would kill him. Any man who could lay his hands on any woman was a first-class coward in his book.
“How long ago?” he asked.
He stared down at her, but she wouldn’t meet his gaze as she continued to speak.
“He came home drunk one night. He called me a prude because I was saving myself for marriage. Said I was stupid to think he’d buy a car without test driving it first.” He watched a blank expression fall over her face as if she were reliving the entire event.
“We argued, and he swung at me. Suddenly, I was on the floor with my shirt ripped and this stabbing pain in my right eye. When he went for my pajama bottoms, I used my knee and hit him in the head hard enough to daze him. That gave me enough time to run and lock myself in the bedroom and call the police. When they got there, they had to bust the door open because I had begun having a full-on panic attack. It was the first of many, no thanks to him.”
She finally turned to look up at him. He could tell that she was trying her best to show she was strong and was over it. Could someone ever get over something so traumatic?
All at once it hit him. She was saving herself for marriage and he had taken that away from her. Guilt came rushing in as he thought about how he pushed her for more.
“You were saving yourself?”
“At first I thought that’s what I was doing, but now I’m positive that Darius just wasn’t the right person.” She looked at him and smiled, easing a small amount of his guilt.
“For what? There was nothing anyone could have done. I would have never thought him capable of hitting me. But I was wrong, and I’ve learned from it.”
She learned from it by shutting herself off from love, commitment, and Eric. He wanted to point that out, but quickly thought the better of it.
“I’m sorry he hit you, and that you had to go through that. But I’m not sorry you left him.” She stared at him. “Because if you hadn’t I wouldn’t have met someone so beautiful and strong.” She gave him a half smile, making his heart swell.
“Thank you, but I’m okay now. I went through a lot of counseling, and I know none of it was my fault.”
She quickly sat up before he could stop her.
“So, you ready for the next movie or do you need another break?”
His gaze fell on her bare breasts then quickly lifted up to her face. She obviously wanted to change the subject, so he would let her. But with where his brain was going now she would probably wish she hadn’t. She had told him about something so traumatic happening in her life and all he could think about now was getting inside of her again. He wanted to worship her and show her that she would never have to worry about being hurt again.
He pulled her onto his lap and held her there. “I think I need another break.”
He took her mouth in a slow and soulful kiss. This woman held his heart and had no idea how much she had come to mean to him in the last few months. But he would show her. In the end, she would have no doubt how much he loved her. Soon she would love him just as much and she was more than worth the wait.
“Ok.” She gasped out as her legs went tighter around his hips. Any guilt he still held evaporated almost immediately.
“Hey Lynn, Eric’s on the line for you. You want me to tell him you moved out of state?”
Lynn smiled at Angel’s agitated voice over the intercom. Since they had gone public with their relationship a month ago, Eric had been calling her office a great deal. A majority of his calls weren’t business related at all; he was usually calling either to make dinner plans or just to chat.
It drove Angel nuts that he wouldn’t just walk down the hall. But if Angel had known what was on Eric’s mind the majority of the day, she wouldn’t want him in Lynn’s office. However, lately everything anyone did drove her nuts. At first, Lynn chalked it up to PMS, but now she was starting to think it was something bigger. She made a note to talk to Angel about it.
Every time Eric came down the hall, he attempted to repeat their little office rendezvous, so she’d had to ban him from her office completely. She told him they needed to remain professional in the office, and he still had a problem following the rules.
He was a different man lately. Gone was Mr. Professional and in his place was Mr. P.D.A. He didn’t seem to care where they were. If he got the urge, he would try to figure out a way to have her right then and there.
They had grown a lot closer. She learned that he had two siblings: an older brother, and a younger sister. They grew up in the suburbs on the outskirts of Portland, and his mom and dad would be married thirty-one years on Christmas day. She had finally told him all about Darius, and the resulting panic attacks. He told her he wouldn’t rush her, and so far he hadn’t. He seemed to be content with having the title of “boyfriend.”
She picked up the line. “Good morning.” She relaxed back into the soft leather of her office chair and smiled.
“Good morning beautiful.”
“What can I do for you this morning Mr. Scott?” He was so easy. She knew her professional tone would turn him on.
“I would like to steal you away for the weekend Ms. Wills. Is that okay with you?” This was a surprise. It was the middle of the week. She wanted a little more time to get ready for a trip.
“Depends. Where you taking me?”
Whoa! What the hell was in California? That would be at least a ten-hour drive, depending on traffic.
“What’s in California?” she asked.
“Not what. Who. My parents are in California.”
The line grew silent as she sat, blindsided, in her chair. His parents? Was she ready for that? They had known each other for a few months. Knowing Eric, he would include all the months they tip toed around each other as time served.
“Umm, your parents?”
“Please don’t freak out on me. I can hear you overthinking it from here.”
She took several deep breaths. She could do this.
“I’m not freaking out. I’ll go.” She couldn’t believe it. She turned in her chair to stare out at the Seattle skyline, pushing her anxiety away.
She heard him let out a long breath. “God, I was so sure that would send you running for the hills.”
“No running, remember?”
“Right, no running.” He paused. “We can head out Friday morning. My mom is looking forward to meeting you.” His mom knew about her. Guilt washed over her. She hadn’t once mentioned Eric to her mother, but then again, her mama’s only interest the last time they talked was money. That was always her only interest when it came to Lynn.
“I feel I should warn you in advance that she loves to cook.”
“Then we should get along just fine, because I love to eat.”
“Hmm so do I…” Her pussy clenched as she thought about just how much he liked to eat. The man had a very talented tongue, and had a huge appetite.
She cleared her throat, “Now is not the time for your dirty talk, mister.” She changed the subject, “What time should I be ready Friday?”
“You’re a spoilsport. I was hoping you would just stay with me Thursday night.” Lately, they had been taking turns staying at each other’s place. At first, it was out of convenience since they lived almost thirty minutes apart, and Eric couldn’t stand not sleeping next to her. Now it just came naturally. They would leave the office together and wherever Eric drove they would stay. They each had a drawer at the other’s place. Well, technically she had half a closet at his place now.
“No way, Jose. You’ve only given me two days’ notice, not to mention all the extra hours I’ll have to put in here at the office, since apparently I’m off on Friday. You’ll have to go without for a few days.”
“It’s only the weekend Lynn.” He exhaled nosily. “It’s not that big of a deal.” Easy for him to say; they were his parents.
“No.” She stood firm on her answer.
“Fine. I’ll just stay at your place then.”
“You either give me space to pack or I’m not going at all. It’s your choice.”
She heard him groan in frustration, “Fine, but I don’t like it. It’s been four hours since I’ve had you and I’m already having withdrawals.” The man was insatiable.
She asked him once how he went so long without sex before her. Evidently, he would just work himself to exhaustion so that when he got home he was too tired to think about it. When he was desperate, he had used his hand.
“I think you’ll live.”
“You don’t know that.”
She grinned as she rolled her eyes. “I have to go. I have a lot of work to do.”
“It was worth a shot.”
She laughed, “Goodbye, Eric.” With that, she turned and placed the phone on the hook. She stared at the abstract painting which hung on the wall across her office. Meeting his parents was a huge step and, to her surprise, she wasn’t that afraid.
They got off to a late start. When he arrived at Lynn’s condo that morning, she was packed and ready to go, but he hadn’t had her for two days. Lifting her skirt, he fucked her mercilessly right against the wall in her entryway, hair and makeup be damned. Now she slept quietly in the passenger seat of his SUV.
Eric pulled into the drive of his parent’s beach house late Friday night. He stared ahead at the house. The last time he had been here, he was married to Lucy. They had lived with his parents to save money while he finished law school. The house brought back both good and bad memories. Since living there, he hadn’t visited often. His mom had been shocked to receive his call last month, and even more so when he told her he was coming for a visit and bringing his girlfriend.
Parking in front of the garage, he cut the engine. He knew his parents would still be awake to greet him, and to meet Lynn. “Wake up sleepy head.”
He nudged her shoulder. She shifted in her seat forcing her skirt to ride higher up her thigh. His dick twitched in his slacks. He nudged her again. “Lynn, baby we’re here.”
Shifting again, her entire body now faced the passenger door. Nudging her harder, he tried again. “Lynn, baby. It’s time to get up.”
He watched her finally begin to rouse. Reaching both hands above her head she grabbed the back of the headrest and arched into a cat like stretch, her legs spread and her chest out, moaning loudly in the process. His dick began to swell. Dragging a hand down from the headrest, she let her fingertips graze her breasts, traveling down her stomach and landing on the inside of her knee. She was aroused; no way in hell was she awake.
He was torn between waking her and watching her masturbate in his parent’s driveway. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from her hand as it slid and stopped just under the hem of her skirt.
“God, you’re easy.”
He glanced up at her face only to see that she was indeed awake and laughing at him. He’d been had.
“And you’re a tease.” Her eyes begin to water from laughing so hard.
“You should have seen your face! It was priceless!” She reached over and pretended to wipe something from his chin, “Is that drool?” Her laughing continued as he made his way out of the driver seat and around to the passenger door. He opened it to find her still laughing.
“Very funny, but you have to know I will get my payback.” She wiped tears from her eyes as her laughter began to subside, and his words began to seep in.
“Okay, okay, I’ll quit.” She held her hands up to surrender. “Now who’s the spoilsport?” Twisting in her seat, she went to step out of the truck. Before she could, Eric grabbed her knees and stopped her. With one hand on each knee, he slowly began to spread her legs. She let him.
“You know, I could eat your pussy right here in my parents’ driveway. I could make you scream until you woke their neighbors. How good would that be for a first impression?” He had only meant it to pay her back, but the idea did sound appealing.
“You’re funny, but there will be none of that, Zorro. Put your sword away.” She slapped his hands away from her knees and pushed at his chest, hopping out of the SUV. “Show some restraint.”
“Around you? Yeah right.”
She gave him a quick peck on the lips. “You can get our bags in a bit. Come on. Let’s head in.” Closing the passenger door, he placed a hand on her lower back and guided her to the front door of the house. Why was he more nervous than she was?
Lynn watched as he used his key to unlock the front door to the beach house. She knew the beach was close. It helped her nerves a bit to hear the soothing sounds of nearby waves crashing, and to smell the salt in the air. She could do this; she just had to be herself. Breathing deeply, she pushed back the panic she felt coming. It was too late for a pep talk.
As the door swung open, a whiff of something warm and sweet hit her nose, making her stomach growl.
“I told you she liked to cook.” Lynn followed Eric over the threshold. Whatever his mom was cooking smelled delicious. He took her coat and hung it in the foyer.
“Follow me. The kitchen’s this way.” She followed him through the massive entryway. Was this how people were supposed to live in retirement? Her own mother certainly didn’t. If she had, she wouldn’t keep calling Lynn to ask for money. When Eric had told her that both of his parents were retired, she just assumed they lived in a quaint little cottage near the beach. Not a mansion on the beach.
“Mom, we’re here!” he yelled.
“I’m in the kitchen, Hon,” a cheerful voice called. Lynn followed Eric through a dining room that held a table big enough to seat eight. Rounding the corner, she saw a petite blonde woman bending to grab a cookie sheet from the stove. She placed it on the granite counter top and turned to meet them with a smile.
Lynn saw shock briefly enter and then just as quickly leave Eric’s mom’s face. Damn him. Eric had failed to tell his mother he was bringing home a black girl. This was going to be awkward.
She watched him walk over to his mom and squeeze her in a tight hug. His mother was short and her eyes matched her son’s. Her overly tanned skin said she spent a lot of time outside.
“Mom, this is Lynn.” His mother’s smile grew bigger. Walking around the island, she grabbed Lynn’s shoulders and pulled her into an air-constricting hug. She smelled like her expensive perfume.
“Oh, thank God,” she whispered in Lynn’s ear. Puzzled, Lynn stared back at her. “It’s so nice to finally meet you, Lynn.” She grabbed both of Lynn’s hands and shook them. This was strange.
“Are you hungry? I baked cinnamon rolls, but if you want real food, I can make you something else.” Lynn stared at her, wordless. This wasn’t exactly what she expected. His mom eyed Lynn as if she had just saved the world. What was happening? Eric came to her rescue.
“Mom, cut her some slack. We just got here. Let me get her settled and then you can feed her.” His irritated tone had caught Lynn’s attention. What was his problem? His mom was only being polite. Weird, it was true, but polite.
“Oh. alright, but hurry. Your dad will be here any minute, and he’ll want to meet Lynn too. He’s out on the boat.” A boat? What type of careers did these people have before retirement?
His mother bounced with excitement. There was nothing special about her. Why all the enthusiasm? Surely Eric had brought a girl home before. Maybe he hadn’t. Maybe they assumed he was gay until now. He was definitely not.
“Come on.” Eric reached for Lynn’s hand and dragged her out of the kitchen. What was going on?
“You okay?” she asked.
“Yeah” he answered curtly.
“You didn’t tell her I was black,” Lynn said accusingly, when they were out of earshot.
“Because it doesn’t matter.” He spoke bluntly, never breaking his stride.
“Maybe not to you” she muttered under her breath.
She slammed into Eric’s back as he stopped suddenly. Turning around to face her, he glared down . “Don’t. We have never regarded our skin color before, and we won’t do it now. As for my mom, trust me. If anything, I’ve just made her day.” He turned and continued up the stairs. Great, now she felt guilty for bringing it up, and was even more confused on top of that.
Holding his hand, she followed him down a hallway and into a room that was easily bigger than her sitting room and bedroom put together. The nautical theme was fitting.
“Wow, this is beautiful.” She spoke in genuine awe.
“Thanks. I’ll be sure to pass it on.” He spoke curtly. She turned to stare at him. Something was going on with him.
“You sure you’re okay?”
“Yes, I’m sure.” He pasted on a smile. “The bathroom is through there.” He pointed to a door in the corner of the room. “Take time to freshen up ,and we’ll head back down to the kitchen when you’re ready.” She saw his shoulders loosen up a bit.
“Okay.” She didn’t understand what was going on with him, but she was too hungry to worry about it at the moment.
The first thing Lynn noticed as she walked into the bathroom was the garden tub. Maybe a warm bath would loosen him up a bit.
“Later.” She jumped as she turned to see Eric leaning in the doorway with a knowing smile on his face.
“You’re so dirty. How am I supposed to freshen up if you’re standing in here?” She crossed her arms over her chest and continued to look at him.
“I’ll watch.” She saw the need in his eyes.
“Oh no you won’t.” She grabbed the door and proceeded to close it.
“Now who’s the spoilsport?” He mimicked her.
“Go.” She closed the door and locked it for good measure. Leaning back against it, she shook her head. The man was something else, but she was beginning to love that about him. Her breath caught in her throat. Love?
Walking slowly over to the vanity, she checked her reflection. Everything was as it should be. She smiled back at herself, testing the weight of the smile on her lips. This didn’t feel like love. She had never felt this way about Darius, not even in the puppy love stages. The things she felt for Darius couldn’t compare to what she felt now, and she had thought she loved him then.
Her body shook with delight. So, this was love. She did a small happy dance in the mirror. It was the same dance she did when she found a perfect pair of jeans. She looked ridiculous doing it, but she didn’t care because she finally understood what love was. She waited for the panic to bubble up over the surface, but it never came.
Smiling at her reflection, she yelled through the locked bathroom door. “Hey Eric!”
“Yeah?” he yelled back from somewhere in the attached bedroom.
“I love you.” A rush of excitement shot through her body. The declaration felt good on her tongue.
The doorknob jiggled, “Unlock the door.” His rigid voice was now on the other side of the door. Boy, he moved fast.
“Why?” She teased, which probably wasn’t the best idea.
The knob jiggled again, “Lynn, open this door.” She walked leisurely over to the door and unlocked it. He pushed it open before she could even twist the knob. Staring down at her, he spoke with a fascinating mixture of softness and roughness, “Say it again.”
Meeting his gaze, she repeated, “I love you.” Grabbing her at the nape, he pulled her to him and flattened her lips with his in a rough kiss. She moaned as their tongues danced a powerful dance. This was love. She gave him everything as he framed her face with his large hands. Guiding her backward toward the vanity, he spun her to face their reflection in the mirror. He stared at her through the mirror, breathing violently, as his hands worked her skirt up and over her ass.
“Say it again.”
“I love you.” His hand came around to slide down the front of her panties, stopping to tease her clit. She moaned loudly as he dipped a finger in and out of her pussy. Still, his eyes did not break contact with hers.
“Say it again,” he growled. The lion was back.
“I love you,” she whimpered. His finger left her pussy, and his hands went to work on his belt. She was burning for him. She felt him maneuver her panties out of the way.
“Say – it – again.” His stare was now filled with determination. She met his gaze head on, giving him everything.
“I – love –y… ahhhhh!” With one hard thrust, he pushed deep into her, squeezing her waist as he rode her hard. Reaching around her again, he returned his hand to her clit, manipulating it with his magic fingers.
“Open your eyes.” Lynn hadn’t realized that they were closed. “Look at me.” She did as he asked. Just like in her dream, his green eyes glowed as they pierced her soul. The storm was coming. His hips sped up as he repeatedly slammed the front of her thighs into the vanity.
“Say it again!” he growled out. Relentlessly, he pounded into her.
“God, I love you!” She came with a rush. Every muscle in her body tightened as the storm took over. She watched through the mirror as the same storm took over his body. He growled out as he came, fighting to keep eye contact with her and pumping into her until every last drop of his release had come out.
His head fell onto her shoulder as he fought to catch his breath. “I love you too.” Slowly pulling out of her, he met her gaze in the mirror. “You don’t know how happy you’ve just made me.” He wrapped his arms tightly round her. His smile refreshed her. All the tension from before had evaporated.
She wiggled backward against his softening manhood. “Hmm, I think I’ve got an idea.”
“You can’t make an announcement like that and expect me to show restraint.” He grinned. He pulled her deeper into his embrace and held her there. “God you’re beautiful.” They stood there, staring at their reflection for what seemed like an eternity.
“We got to get down stairs,” she finally murmured. Fatigue was beginning to close in, and the last thing she wanted to do was to face his parents after fucking their son in the guest bathroom. But she wanted to get the introductions out of the way.
“We don’t have too. I’ll just tell mom that you’re not feeling well, and we can play catch-up in the morning.”
“No, we can go.” She yawned out. “I don’t want to be rude, and plus, I really want one of those cinnamon rolls.
“Okay, it’s your call.” There was no pressure on his part, and she loved him for that.
“Let’s go.” She smiled up at him.
This was love.
Lynn couldn’t help the smile that remained stuck on her face ever since Friday night. The weekend had been great, and Eric’s parents were amazing. Saturday night, they had thrown a dinner party, and several of their friends made an appearance and welcomed her with open arms. They really seemed to openly accept her into their family, and they even begged the two of them to return the following weekend.
Eric had never left her side. They slept together, ate together, and even bathed together. If he left the room, he was back within seconds. It was cute, but when his father invited him out to fish on their last morning there, she had nearly pushed him out the door.
Now, she sat on his parents’ covered back patio enjoying breakfast with his mother and her best friend, Sherry. She smiled as she thought back to the night before. Eric’s mom had introduced Sherry as her best friend, and laughed at the look of shock on Lynn’s face. Sherry was black. Eric had been right; her skin color hadn’t mattered.
“Look at her over there, she can’t stop smiling!” Sherry’s voice pulled Lynn out of her own little world. Lynn looked up and smiled at her. Sherry lived alone, two houses up from the Scott’s. She reminded Lynn a lot of her own mother, except she didn’t ask Lynn for money. She was very talkative and she spoke her mind. Just the night before, she had hugged Eric and told him he looked like he could use more sleep. He just laughed and introduced her as his aunt.
“I really appreciate you cooking breakfast this morning, Sherry.” The food was amazing. There was a delicious spread of bacon, eggs, pancakes, and fresh fruit. Sherry seemed very well acquainted with the Scott household.
“Oh, honey, it was nothing. Mary and I do this every Sunday. She makes these delicious mimosas and I do the cooking. That’s why we get along so well,” she joked.
“That’s right.” Eric’s mother raised her glass in agreement.
“So Lynn, tell us how you and Eric met.” Uh oh. Lynn knew this interrogation would come sooner or later. Sherry was just as nosy as Angel, who had happened to call earlier to make sure Eric hadn’t chopped her up and left her on the side of the highway. So, Lynn knew it was only a matter of time.
“We work together.” It was a short answer that she knew Sherry wouldn’t let fly. She looked over at Eric’s mom, who seemed to be waiting for more of an answer from her. Mary had been very polite not to ask many questions, but Eric was no longer around, and Lynn was sure his mother would take advantage of the fact.
“We know that already, child. Tell us something we don’t know.” Lynn knew deep down the questions were coming from Eric’s mother. Sherry was just brave enough to ask for her friend. She may as well get it over with.
She told them the entire story of how she and Eric had eventually become a couple, leaving out all the sex details. Both women sat staring at her with mouths open wide enough to catch flies.
Eric’s mom finally spoke. “So, you’re telling me that my Eric pursued you?”
Lynn sat back in her chair, taking offense to the question, “Is that so hard to believe?”
“Oh! No, no, no honey. I don’t mean it like that,” she rushed to clarify. “You’re a beautiful young lady, and any man would be lucky to have you. It’s just…” she paused. “It’s so unlike him.”
Lynn was confused. They had no idea what they were talking about. Eric had pursued her panties off. Literally. “I’m sorry to shock you, but it’s exactly like him. He’s definitely no hermit.”
She watched the women glance at each other then back at her. In unison, they erupted into laughter. Lynn asked for an explanation.
“What’s so funny?”
Sherry spoke, “Honey, we know two totally different Erics.”
She was curious to know who the “other” Eric was that they knew.
“Sherry, I do believe you were right,” Mary finally spoke up.
“Didn’t I tell you? All he needed was something different. I believe you owe me fifty big ones.” Dear lord, now they were betting. These two were double trouble. Lynn was afraid to ask what the bet was about.
“I don’t remember betting fifty bucks!”
“Oh yes you did, and don’t try to take it back!” They were two funny old women. Lynn knew that one day this would be her and Sade, two old hags bickering over money and soap operas. Lynn had to know.
“What did you bet on?”
Sherry spoke up, “Eric had taken the divorce pretty badly, and Mary worried that he wouldn’t be able to move on. I told her he would be fine, that he just needed a stronger woman. See, that Lucy, she was too needy and impatient. I bet Mary all the money in my account at the time that he would be fine, and at the time I had only fifty dollars.”
“How do I know you had fifty dollars in your account? It could have been only ten,” Mary asked back.
The two continued bickering back and forth. Neither had noticed the shock on Lynn’s face. She felt like she had just been kicked in the gut.
Eric had been married.
How had he failed to mention that? She had told him all about her past, and not once had he thought to mention that he had been married before.
She had never thought to ask him about any of his ex-girlfriends, never even suspected that there could be an ex-wife. Her name was Lucy. What had happened? Why had they divorced? Sherry said he had taken it hard. Did he still love her? So many unanswered questions swam in Lynn’s head. She thought about his strange behavior the first night. She rubbed her temples as she felt a migraine coming on.
“Lynn. Are you okay honey?” Mary’s voice was filled with concern. Words seem to be lost as Lynn tried to answer her, and couldn’t. She sat there, her mouth open, but nothing came out. She gave up and dropped her head into her hands.
He had lied. Sure, it was a lie of omission, but it was still a lie. She could feel the tears begin to form, and she fought them back. Sherry and Mary assumed she was some strong woman, but she wasn’t. She was weak, and she fell for his bullshit. Love? This sure as hell wasn’t love.
“You didn’t know, did you?” Lynn knew it was Sherry asking. She shook her head, still holding it in her hands, without making eye contact. Sherry would be able to read behind her façade. The woman seemed to see everything.
“Oh Lynn. Honey, I’m so sorry. We just assumed you knew.” Mary’s small voice cracked. “Sherry, we’re so stupid!” Lynn finally met Mary’s gaze. She wouldn’t’ let Mary blame herself.
“Oh, Mary, you’ve done nothing wrong. Please don’t beat yourself up. Eric’s a big boy and should have told me himself.” Lynn grabbed her glass flute that had been filled with mimosa and emptied it in one gulp. She could really use a shot of tequila. As the cool liquid slid down her throat, a scary thought crossed her mind.
“How long ago did they divorce?” The question was directed at Eric’s mother.
“No.” Sherry interjected shaking her head. “This is something that you and Eric need to talk about. If I had known he hadn’t told you, I would have never even brought it up.”
“But you did.” Lynn said stared at her accusingly.
“I know and I-”
“Almost a year.” Sherry was cut short by Mary.
“Mary, don’t get in the middle of this. They have to handle this themselves.”
“No, Sherry. I won’t lie to her, and neither would Eric, if she had asked him. Did you ever ask him?”
Lynn didn’t see why that mattered.
“No, I didn’t, but he knows all about my past. Not once did he think to tell me about his. He’s newly divorced, for Christ’s sake; he’s not even ready for a real relationship.” Lynn dropped her head back into her hands.
“Please, don’t leave him.” Lynn looked up to meet Mary’s gaze, “You have no idea what it’ll do to him. He’s a totally different person with you. I knew the moment that I saw you, that you would be perfect for him. He’s so happy now, and I haven’t seen him smile like this in years. Just give him a chance to explain. I’m sure there’s a good explanation.”
Lynn’s eyes began to water. She could see the fear in Mary’s eyes, the fear of losing her son again. Lynn couldn’t stay and promise her it would all work out, because she knew it probably wouldn’t.
“I’m going to go start packing.” She rose from her seat, and headed towards the sliding glass door.
“Lynn, please don’t do this – ”
Lynn turned to her.
“I didn’t do this. He did this. I’m sorry for any hurt this causes you, but I can’t do this.” Lynn turned and rushed through the open back door, before her tears could be seen. She just wanted to go home, but home was almost ten hours away.
Eric took the stairs onto the back patio two at a time. He had only been gone from Lynn a few hours, and yet it felt like a lifetime to him.
She loves me.
He repeated it to himself over and over. It was a huge step in the right direction for them. He couldn’t remember the last time he had felt so alive. The weekend had gone so well, and he had worried all for nothing.
Entering the mudroom, he removed his coat and shoes. His mother was at it again; a smell of something sweet swam toward him from the kitchen. After putting up his tackle box, he made his way into the kitchen. He found Sherry and his mother in deep discussion at the bar. The two old girls never stopped; they were horrible about gossiping. His dad always joked that if he ever went deaf it would be because those two had talked his ears off.
“I see my two favorite women are still at it. You know all that gossiping isn’t good for you,” he joked.
Sherry looked up at him with disapproval in her eyes. That was a first. He was always Sherry’s favorite.
“I was only kidding. Geez, tough crowd.”
“Come here.” Sherry was like an aunt to him. It was rare to see her upset, and the look on her face said that she was pissed. He did as he was told, coming to a stop directly in front of her.
“What’s wrong?” He hadn’t seen it coming until it was too late.
“Ow! What the hell did you do that for?” The slap stung under his palm as he rubbed the back of his head. In all the years Eric had known Sherry, she had never laid a hand on him.
“Have you lost your damn mind? Why in the hell didn’t you tell Lynn about Lucy?” she was yelling.
“Lynn! She was blindsided today. We were having breakfast out back when I mentioned how she was much better for you than Lucy was. Imagine the shocked look on her face, not to mention the shock that she felt, finding out from a stranger that her boyfriend had recently been married!” Sherry glared at Eric with her hands on her hips. His mother stood next to her, shaking her head in disapproval.
“You’d better fix this son. I really like Lynn.”
His blood began to boil. “I can’t believe you two! This is your problem. This is what gossiping will do. Are you happy now?”
Using her finger, Sherry poked him in the chest. “Don’t you put this on us Eric. This is all on you! We’ve taught you better than this!”
This was not happening. Everything had been going so well, so why ruin it by bringing up the past? Lynn would never forgive him for keeping something so big from her. He had planned on telling her, but he didn’t want to ruin their weekend. What a huge fuck up on his part.
“Where is she?”
“She went up to pack about an hour ago, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she snuck out and was on the way home by now,” Sherry snapped.
Eric couldn’t take on three women at one time. Right now, Lynn was his priority.
“Dammit!” His fist hit the bar as he turned, hurrying from the kitchen to the stairs. Taking them as fast as he could, he ran down the hall and into the bedroom they were sharing. Fear ran up his spine at the thought that she would be gone.
Entering the bedroom, he found her sitting motionless on the edge of the bed, holding her overnight bag in her lap. She stared down at the floor, her untamed braids hiding her face.
Closing the door behind him, he moved closer and studied her with no clue about where to begin. He knew nothing he said would make it okay.
“Lynn I –”
“I want to go home,” she interjected with her head down.
“Lynn, please just let me explain.”
“I want to go home, now.” She maintained her position, fiddling with the strap on her bag.
“Don’t do this, Lynn. We’ve come too far for this. Please talk to me.” Snapping her head up, she glared at him. She looked pissed. This wasn’t his Lynn.
“Talk to you? I did talk to you! I told you everything about my past. You should have talked to me!” She stood up abruptly, throwing the strap of her overnight bag over her shoulder. “Go fuck yourself!” He blocked her path as she moved to pass him.
She shoved at his chest. “Eric, move.”
He grabbed at her wrist only to have her yank it away violently, out of his grasp. “Don’t touch me. Don’t you ever touch me again!”
“You’re not leaving the room like this.” She had every right to be pissed, but he had just as much of a right to try and fix the situation. He walked over to the bedroom door and locked it. Bracing himself, he turned and nearly ran into her head on.
“Take me home, Eric.” Her eyes were swollen and filled with hurt and anger. She had been crying. His heart dropped. He had done this to her. It killed him to know that he was responsible for causing her pain, when he had promised her that he wouldn’t. He went to grab her hand and she jerked away from within his reach. Any trust that she had for him was gone.
“I know I should have told you, and I’m so sorry. I fucked up, but you have to know that I didn’t do this to hurt you. I love you.” She grimaced when he said the last thing.
“Love!” she yelled, her voice tight with anger, “You had me sleeping in the room you shared with her; you fucked me in the same bed that you fucked her in! Don’t say you love me. You don’t know the meaning!”
“Yes, I do! And I know you love me too. Lynn, please don’t do this.”
“You did this, so don’t you dare put this on me! I told you everything about my past and Darius, and you hid everything about yours from me!”
He hated the mention of her lousy ex. “I know and I’m so-”
“Why?” she cut in. “Why didn’t you just tell me? Didn’t I deserve to know what I was getting into?”
“Yes! I should have told you about Lucy and about the divorce. I fucked up, okay, Lynn. I’m sorry.” His chest hurt at the thought of losing her, especially after they had taken such a big step.
“Me too,” she murmured. He could see it in her eyes; she had already given up on him.
“You’re running.” He challenged her, “You said you wouldn’t run.” He stepped into her personal space, grabbing and holding her hand tightly, thankful for the closeness.
“And you said I could trust you,” she retorted. Pulling away from his grasp, she let the overnight bag fall to the floor and turned away from him.
He watched as she paced the room. “I didn’t tell you about the divorce, because I didn’t want this to happen. I knew you’d run from me.”
She stopped her pacing and glared at him. “Stop putting this on me.” He had no right to be angry with her, but he couldn’t seem to keep down his frustration.
“When was I supposed to tell you? Huh?! While I was busy trying to get you to love me? Or after I finally got you to admit it? Which would have been a good time for you Lynn?” he asked.
“How about our first date!” she shouted.
“If I had, what would it have mattered? I wasn’t with her anymore. I didn’t love her anymore!” He had had every opportunity to tell Lynn about Lucy, but he clammed up every time, afraid she would run. And he was right.
“No one gets over a divorce that fast. You’re an attorney. You know I’m right. You still had feelings for her, and I was just a rebound!” she yelled, throwing her hands up.
“That’s bullshit! If I had still loved her, do you think I would have even asked you out? You know me better than that!” He felt like pulling his hair out. There was no doubt that by now his parents and Sherry could hear every word of their argument.
“No, I don’t. I don’t know anything about you, because you hid it from me.” Lynn spoke though her teeth.
He crowded her into the dresser and he lowered his voice, “You’re right. I did, and I’m sorry, but I never hid the fact that I love you. I have loved you for months Lynn.”
“Did you still love her, after she left?” she asked. He knew the answer would only piss her off, giving her even more of a reason to push him away. It was her plan all along. She would rather run, than stay and fight. He wouldn’t lie to her, though, ever again.
“Yes. Is that what you want to hear? That I still loved her after she gave up on our marriage? That I begged her to give us another shot? Then Yes! I was married to her for Chris’st sake. I worked my ass off through law school so that I could give her everything she wanted, but it still wasn’t enough. I’m not going to lie to you. It took me months to get over it, and one day I just kind of woke up and decided she wasn’t worth it. She wasn’t worth the time I sat around moping when I could be doing what I had worked so hard for.”
He lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him. “Then I was hired at the firm, and that was when I met you. It’s when I realized that I was never really in love with Lucy. I fell hard for you, and what I felt for Lucy didn’t even come close to what I feel for you.” Lynn stared back at him with uncertainty in her eyes. He didn’t like what he saw.
“I want to go home,” she said as her gaze met the wall.
Releasing a breath, he gave up. Running his hands over his face he stepped away from her. “Please, tell me how I can fix this.”
She wouldn’t meet his gaze. “Take me home.” She moved past him. “I’ll wait downstairs.”
“Lynn, don’t do this. Please.” He stood and watched as she unlocked the door and left the room.
She was running.
“You’re a Coward.”
“Fuck you.” Once again, Lynn sat at Sade’s kitchen table. It was just past midnight, two hours since Eric had dropped her off home. The ride home from his parents’ house had been mostly silent. Eric wanted to talk, and he tried for hours, but Lynn had remained silent. After a while, she feigned sleep just to avoid any more of his begging.
When they arrived at her condo he walked her to the door, but she didn’t invite him in. The minute he was gone, she repacked her overnight bag and headed to Sade’s.
Her safe place.
“So, how long you in for this time?”
Sade stood leaning against the counter with her arms crossed over her chest. Her hair was wrapped tightly and her eyes were puffy from sleep. When she had opened the door to find Lynn standing there, she hadn’t asked any questions. Lynn knew she could always count on her to be there, but she also knew the questions would come eventually.
“I don’t know. A week maybe. I just need a little time.”
Lynn needed to gather her thoughts, and there was no way Eric would leave her alone to do that. She had sent Mike an email to inform him that she would need a week off. No doubt as soon as word got to Eric, he would be there, beating on her door.
“Again? What could he have possibly done this time? He already took your virginity, and that only kept you in hiding for a weekend.”
“He lied to me,” she replied.
“He used to be married.” Sade stared at her as if waiting for the other shoe to drop.
“And that’s it. He hasn’t even been divorced a full year. I was just a rebound.”
“Hold up.” Ever the drama queen, Sade pulled a chair from the brown, bar-height dinner table and sat across from Lynn. “Did he say that?”
“Not exactly, but I know that I was.”
Sade gave Lynn a look of annoyance. “What exactly did he say?”
Lynn started from the beginning. She told Sade about finding out, and Eric’s apologies. By the time she finished, Sade looked irritated.
“So, let me get this right. Eric is human? Thank God for that, because for a second I thought the man was an alien,” Sade mocked.
This wasn’t the response Lynn was looking for. Sade was on Eric’s side. “Lynn, I know what you’re doing. You think you’re slick. That boy loves you, and you’re scared, so you’re using some lame ass excuse about him being divorced to push him away. Who gives a damn if he got a divorce?”
“No, I’m not doing that. He knew how I felt about trust, and I told him all about Darius. He should have told me.”
“Then what? Would that have changed anything? Would it have changed your feelings for him?”
“No. Maybe. I don’t know.”
“You don’t know? Did his feelings for you change after he found out about Darius, and your attacks?”
Lynn knew what was coming. No, Eric’s feelings hadn’t changed. He accepted it all.
“I don’t think so.”
“You know they didn’t. Look, I love you, but you’ve got to stop doing this to yourself.”
“I just need time.”
“Sometimes time can be your worst enemy. He’s not going to wait forever, Lynn.” Lynn thought back to what Eric said about his divorce. He had been sad for a while, but eventually he realized his ex-wife wasn’t worth it.
Would he think Lynn was worth it?
“Speaking of time, how long has it been since you had a period?”
Lynn couldn’t remember her last period.
“I know you’re thinking this is PMS, but it’s not. I just need time. I told you from the beginning that I felt like this was moving too fast for me.”
“I knew it.” Sade rose from her seat and walked over to the stove. “This has nothing to do with PMS. This is a whole new level of hormones girlfriend.” Reaching into the cabinet above it, she pulled out a brown paper bag.
“What’s that?” Lynn asked as she watched her friend walk over and sit the paper bag on the kitchen table, right in front of her.
Lynn opened the bag. Reaching in, she grabbed the contents and pulled it out. It was an unopened pregnancy test. She looked across the table at Sade inquiringly.
“You got something to tell me, Day?” She couldn’t remember her friend mentioning any one special in her life.
“Yep, you’re pregnant.”
“Umm, no I’m not.”
What the hell?
“And why do you have a pregnancy test?”
“I went and bought it. After you had sex the fourth time without using protection, I knew it was only a matter of time. Did you think you could just keep having unprotected sex with no consequences?”
“I think I would know if I were pregnant.”
“Oh yeah? When was your last period, Lynn?” Sade began tapping on the table. Lynn stared at her, and began counting the weeks in her head. The ticking of the kitchen clock kept throwing her count off. It hadn’t been that long ago…it was the week before her and Eric’s first night together. How long ago was that?
“You need a calendar?”
“No!” Lynn yelled. “Just shut up and let me think.” Sade threw her hands up, surrendering.
She restarted her counting while Sade hummed a mocking tune under her breath. How long had it been? Her head began to hurt from thinking so hard.
“You can’t remember, can you? Lynn, just admit that there is a possibility that you could be.”
“No!” She wouldn’t. There was a huge possibility that she could be, but saying it made it too real.
They had only used a condom twice, and that had been on their lazy day in. There was nothing lazy about that day. They had only used two condoms, because it was all Eric had brought with him. After they used those, they’d come up with more creative was to take each other to ecstasy.
Pregnant? She didn’t know anything about babies. She gasped in shock. Jesus Christ, what was she thinking? She wasn’t ready for a baby!
“Oh God.” Her chest began to pound. A baby. Eric’s baby. “Oh God, Oh God, Oh God!”
“Lynn?” Sade was at her side quickly. “Lynn you’re shaking. Breathe babe come on. We don’t know that you’re pregnant yet. You haven’t taken any test.” Sade massaged her shoulders. Lynn’s throat began to swell.
“Oh God. Oh God. Oh God. “
“Lynn calm down, you had to know this could be a possibility.”
Lynn could feel the warm tears roll down her cheeks as reality hit her. “Oh God, Day, what the hell is wrong with me? What was I thinking?”
“Nothing is wrong with you, honey, you’re fine, and you need to calm down. You’re probably working yourself up over nothing.”
This wasn’t nothing. This was a baby. Lynn couldn’t stop the shaking; she was having a full-blown panic attack. She knew how to stop it but couldn’t seem to. Her heart roared and her palms were damp with sweat.
Pregnant? Oh God.
“I ca-n’t breathe.” Lynn reached for her neck as the room seemed to close in around her. “Day-” she cried out.
“Lynn, breathe! Everything is going to be okay. Calm down. You’re having another attack.” Sade held her tight. She could hear the fear in her friend’s voice. “I’ve got you baby, I’m right here.”
“I ca-n’t stop-” Lynn saw black before she could finish her sentence.
Sade half carried and half dragged Lynn into the guest room. They had been through this before, but this time was different. If Lynn was pregnant the panic attack could hurt the baby, or worse, kill it. She’d be damned if she let anything happened to her future niece or nephew.
Settling Lynn onto the guest room bed Sade checked her pulse and was happy to find that there still was one. She quickly left the room to get her cell phone. She called her friend, Brian. Brian was a pediatrician with his own practice in Seattle. After several minutes on the phone with him, she was reassured that Lynn would be fine. She just needed to rest and make a doctor’s appointment as soon as possible. She called Angel next.
“Hello?” Angel’s fatigue-filled voice picked up on the second ring.
“Hey girl, it’s me, Sade.”
“I know who the hell this is. Why are you calling me this early in the morning?”
Angel was usually a morning person, but she obviously wasn’t an early morning person. Sade told her everything that was going on.
“So, I need Eric’s cellphone number. I know she loves him, and if she’s pregnant this is something they need to deal with together. You know Lynn. She’ll try to take control of everything, and that’ll only cause her to have more attacks like these.” Sade knew Angel would agree with her.
“And that can’t be good for a baby.” Angel placed Sade on hold to get Eric’s cellphone number. Sade wrote the number down as Angel recited it.
“Okay thanks. Let me give him a call.”
“Alright, keep me posted on Lynn.”
Sade disconnected the call. Looking down at Eric’s number she began to dial. She felt bad for the poor sap. Lynn’s commitment issues had nothing to do with him and everything to do with Darius. She liked Eric. And any man who treated Lynn with the respect that Eric did was okay in her book. At first Sade had been skeptical. Eric seemed too clingy and he demanded too much of Lynn’s time. But then she began to see how happy Lynn had been recently. She understood her friend’s fears, but she couldn’t let them control her life.
“Hello?” Eric didn’t sound like he had been asleep.
“Hello Eric, this is Sade. Lynn’s Friend.” Sade couldn’t understand why she was nervous.
“Look, I swear I never meant to hurt her. I love her.” Sade smiled.
Eric had taken her threat seriously. About a month or so back they had all gone to dinner, and she pulled him to the side. She wanted to be sure he understood just how much Lynn meant to her.
“Calm down. I’m not calling to kill you. It’s about Lynn.”
“What’s wrong? Is she okay?” She could hear the worry in his voice.
“Not at the moment. She had a panic attack.” Sade heard rustling on the other end of the line.
“What?! Where is she?” His voice was frantic.
“She’s here at my apartment.”
“Oh God. I did this to her.” She had to tell him.
“Actually, it’s my fault.” The guilt began to flood in as she realized it was the truth. Had she not questioned Lynn on a possible pregnancy, she wouldn’t have freaked out.
“Wait, what? How? What happened?”
Sade told Eric everything, including the fact that she thought there was a chance he would soon be a father. She knew it probably wasn’t the best way for him to find out, but he would know soon enough. She couldn’t take the chance of Lynn trying to hide it from him, and take on all the responsibility herself.
“Pregnant? Sade, please, I have to see her.” Sade agreed. She gave Eric her address. Lynn would no longer have a place to hide from him. It was time her friend moved on.
“We need to get her to a hospital.”
“No, we don’t Eric. She’ll be fine. She just needs some rest.” Lynn could hear the whispering voices just outside of the guestroom door. How long had she been out? When had Sade called Eric?
“You told me that there is a possibility she is carrying our child. A panic attack can’t be good for the baby.” His worried voice spoke up.
Lynn lightly rubbed her flat stomach. If she was pregnant, Eric had already accepted it. Why did the idea of being a mother scare the hell out of her?
She could probably blame her mother; she had made raising a child seem like a chore. She always spoke about what she had given up when Lynn was born. Her parents had never married, because her dad already had a wife. When her mother had announced her pregnancy, his reaction was to offer her money for an abortion.
“Trust me I know that, but do you want the first time you meet her mama to be at a hospital? Do you know what that woman will do once she finds out that her daughter is dating a white man, and might be pregnant? She’ll eat you alive, and then what will Lynn do?”
Sade was right. Lynn hadn’t told her mother about Eric, because she knew how her mother would react. In her mother’s eyes, Eric had used Lynn, and her times of getting a handout would come to an end. Never mind the fact that he loved her, and wanted a commitment that Lynn kept running from. When had she lost control over her own life?
She heard the door open.
She turned her head to meet Eric’s gaze. The bedside lamp gave the room a soft glow. Through teary eyes she could see that he still wore the same clothes that he’d worn on the trip home. There were shadows around his eyes and his hair was hidden under a baseball cap. His worried eyes stared back at her.
“Lynn, baby, are you up?”
“Yes.” She couldn’t stop the tears.
In an instant Eric was at her side on the bed, pulling her up and into his arms. “It’s okay baby, I’m right here. Shhh…” He pulled her onto his lap and held her tight as he rocked her. She melted into his embrace, letting his warmth consume her. The rocking calmed her as she cried into his chest. He was just what she needed. The sat like that for what seemed like forever. Her tears had long dried when he spoke again.
“I want to take you to the hospital, but Sade says it’s your choice.” He was scared for her.
“Just be here with me please. It’ll do me more good than any hospital would.” Settling her back onto the bed, Eric straightened out next her, pulling her on top of him so that her head rested on his chest. His fingertips feathered up and down her back. “Lynn, I love you.”
“There’s a chance I could be pregnant.” She knew Sade had already told him.
“I know, and I know that you’re scared, but you don’t have to be. I swear to you that no matter what, I will be here every step of the way.” She looked up into his face. He had lost the baseball hat. His hair was the messiest she had ever seen it.
“I’m not sure I would be a good mother. I don’t know anything about kids.”
“Shhh. Get some rest. We can deal with this in the morning.” He kissed her forehead and pulled her tighter against his chest.
“I love you too, Eric.” She felt exhaustion pull over her once more.
“Well, Ms. Wills, it looks like you’d better start painting that nursery. You are definitely pregnant.”
Lynn sat with Eric across from Dr. Collins, soaking it all in. The information didn’t surprise them. It had been a day since she took the at-home pregnancy test that Sade had bought. They had come to terms with it. Eric’s constant reassurance that she wasn’t alone had helped a lot.
She had spent the last few nights at his place. Unlike Lynn, He couldn’t stay home the entire week. He had several trials through the week and had to be there. But that didn’t stop him from calling during breaks and checking on her. He had gone from being worried she would run to worried about her eating enough in a matter of hours.
She found herself browsing baby websites and catalogs dropped off by Sade. Her excitement began to grow as everyone around her showed their support.
They wanted to wait for confirmation from a doctor before they told their parents. No need to raise too much excitement for nothing.
“What about the panic attacks?” Eric spoke up. He was still upset that she hadn’t let him take her to the hospital that night, or the day after.
The doctor smiled at Eric, understanding his concern. “Panic attacks in pregnancy are common. This is especially true in the beginning when hormones are flying around, and unfortunately for Lynn here because they’re a pre-existing condition they may become worse. The only way we can help control them is to be sure to keep her stress level low.” This was not at all what she needed to hear.
“So, she should probably quit working then.”
“What?!” She stared at him. It wasn’t a question. Eric had lost his mind. “I’m not quitting my job.”
“But he said we needed to keep your stress level low.”
The doctor spoke up. “Mr. Scott please calm down. I didn’t mean she would have to quit her job. There are other ways to do this. I’ll have my nurse print a list for you.”
“But would quitting her job help a great deal?”
The older woman looked over at Lynn. “Doesn’t sound like it. Careful Mr. Scott. You could land yourself in hot water.” She looked back down at her notes and began to write.
Lynn glared over at Eric. He wouldn’t meet her glare.
“Now Lynn, I’m going to start you on some prenatal vitamins, and I want you to be sure to take them every day. Mr. Scott I want you to be sure that she does.”
“No-” Lynn answered at the same time as Eric. “We don’t live together.”
Eric stared at her. She frowned back at him. Lynn knew eventually Eric would want just that, but she wouldn’t give in to him yet this time. She had worked hard for her condo, and she’d be damned if she gave it up for him.
The doctor smiled at Eric. “You’re a bold one Mr. Scott.”
“Thank you, ma’am.” Lynn rolled her eyes as she watched Eric give the older woman one of his killer smiles.
“Now, will there be anything else?”
“No.” Lynn answered quickly. She was quickly becoming frustrated with Eric’s caveman tactics.
As they stood, Eric shook the doctor’s hand. “Thank you so much for your help. We’ll be seeing you.”
“No problem. You two take it easy, and remember, low stress.”
The good doctor had no way of knowing that they were headed out to meet Lynn’s mother for lunch. Lynn could smell the stress coming from a mile away. It was Eric’s idea for them to tell her mother together. He wanted to meet the woman who would be the grandmother of his child.
Lynn knew she should have, but she didn’t warn him. She really didn’t know how to explain her relationship with her mother to him. However, now the fun was just about to begin, because after his attitude this morning, Lynn didn’t feel so bad about throwing him to the wolves.
Lynn spotted her mom the minute they stepped into the restaurant. Rosa sat near the back, her cleavage enhanced no doubt with the help of a push up bra. She wore makeup that would put a prostitute to shame, and her weave flowed down her back. She looked several years younger than her actual age and she knew it. But gravity didn’t lie, and slowly time was catching up with her.
As she and Eric approached the table, Lynn watched her mother’s hungry eyes fall on Eric and roam his body from top to bottom. She wouldn’t want him, only his wallet. If they had been in a cartoon, Lynn had no doubt that Rosa would have animated dollar signs popping from her eye sockets. Yep, this was Rosa at her best. She hadn’t even noticed her own daughter walking next to the guy she was eyeing.
If Lynn said so herself, Eric did look delicious today. He had left court to pick her up before the doctor’s appointment. The navy-blue suit he wore hugged him in all the right places.
Finally, her mother’s eyes met hers as if seeing her for the first time. She looked back and forth between Lynn and Eric, a puzzled look on her face.
“This is Eric, my boyfriend.” Lynn did a happy dance inside as she watched the shock register on her mother’s face.
“Eric, this is my mother, Rosa Burton.” She watched as Eric reached out to shake her mother’s hand. Her mother rose from her chair as she shook back.
“It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Burton.”
“And you too. I’m sorry, but this is the first I’ve heard of any boyfriend.”
“Yes, well I’ve heard a lot about you. It’s just nice to finally get to meet you.” Lynn watched Eric waiting for his killer smile to appear.
She cleared her throat. “Why don’t we all sit down so you two can get to know each other a little more?” Lynn looked around and signaled for the waiter as they took their seats.
They ordered drinks. Her mother gave Lynn a strange look when Eric changed Lynn’s drink order from a soda to water without asking Lynn’s permission. He was really taking this too far. They would have to discuss it out of the presence of his mother.
“Is there something wrong with my daughter’s mouth, Eric? Her mother asked as the waiter left the table. So much for saving the conversation for later.
“Is she not capable of making her own decisions?” This was not happening.
“Mama, Stop it.”
“What, and allow some man I just met to tell my daughter what she can and can’t drink? Next, he’ll be telling you where you can and can’t spend your money.”
Lynn now understood what the problem was. Her mother felt threatened by Eric. With him in the picture there was a possibility that her handouts were coming to an end. She was partially right. With a baby coming Lynn would have to spend her money more wisely, and that meant she would no longer be an easy meal ticket for her mom.
“What? Wait, that’s not at all what I was doing,” Eric said. “Lynn has been a bit under the weather lately. I was only looking out for her health. I’m sorry if it seemed like more than it was.”
Lynn noticed he had left it up to her to make the announcement. This definitely wasn’t the time. She would wait until after their meal.
“Mmm hmm.” Her mother sat back in her chair and stared across the table at them. He met her gaze head on. “So, how did you two meet?”
“We work in the same office. I’m a lawyer at the firm Lynn works at.”
“So, you’re her boss.”
“No. I’m her boyfriend who just happens to work in the same office with her.”
Lynn could hear what sounded like irritation in Eric’s response. The waiter came back with their drinks and proceeded to take their order. Lynn, thankful for the interruption, quickly changed the subject.
“You look nice today, Mama.” Feeding her mother’s ego was always the quickest way to get her attention. She watched as her mother sat back in her chair, pushing her breasts forward and her chin up.
“Thank you. I’ve been trying something different.” She looked across the table at Eric. “Apparently we all have.”
Lynn knew this would happen. Her mother never was one to hold back. She said whatever she was feeling. Eric would now know exactly what he was in for.
“So, Lynn tells me you’re retired now. Congratulations. That must feel great.”
“It does. I worked hard to see that Lynn had a great childhood. I’d like to think that she is who she is today because of it.” Lynn almost choked on her water. If her mother thought she had given her the perfect childhood, then she was more delusional than Lynn thought. Lynn needed to take a quick breather before she snapped.
“I’m going to run to the bathroom.” She looked over at Eric, whose eyes begged Lynn not to leave him alone with her mother.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be right back.” She gave him a quick wink and left the table.
Eric sat across from Lynn’s mother in silence. He knew that no matter what happened, this lunch was not going to end well. The woman had her mind made up, and she was not happy with her daughter dating him. He just couldn’t understand why, in the twenty first century, this was even a big deal anymore. Now he understood why Lynn thought it mattered to his parents that she was black.
“So,” she asked. “How long have you been seeing my daughter?”
He looked across at the woman who birthed Lynn. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that she was nothing like her daughter. She had on way too much makeup and her breasts were just a bounce away from landing on the table for all to see. How was Lynn the offspring of this woman?
Sade had brought him up to speed on Lynn and her mother’s relationship, or lack there off. It was his understanding that the only time she called Lynn was to ask for money. In some way, Lynn felt like she owed her mother. But Rosa received a monthly retirement check that was more than enough to cover her bills; instead she spent it on things she didn’t need. So, when it came time for the bills to be paid, she called Lynn.
He was lucky that Lynn had a friend like Sade looking out for her, but now he would take on that responsibility.
“Six months.” Technically, they had only been dating officially dating a month and some days, but the lie was worth the look of shock on her mother’s face.
“Funny, she ain’t never mentioned you. Doesn’t that seem strange?”
“Well, I’m sure she had her reasons. She has been a bit busy lately. Better late than never, right?”
He watched as she rolled her eyes like an adolescent. “I guess. I just hope she knows what she’s getting into.” He knew an insult when he heard one.
“I’m sure she does. She’s had months to change her mind.”
“Look – ”
He was saved by the waiter, who was arriving with the food. But it wouldn’t be for long. Where was Lynn? As the waiter retreated, Rosa glared at him.
“If you think you’re just going to come up in here and order my daughter around, you got another thing coming.”
“That is not my intention, Ms. Burton.” She obviously didn’t know her own daughter. If she did, she would know there was no way Lynn would allow him to order her around.
“Yeah, whatever. You can tell somebody else that lie.” He watched as she rudely dug into her food. She must have sensed that he was watching her.
“You gonna eat or are you gonna just sit there and watch me?”
“I think I’ll wait for Lynn before I begin. Speaking of, maybe I should go and check on her. It’s been a while.” He went to stand just as he saw Lynn walking toward them.
“You had me worried for a second.” He gave her a light kiss on the cheek and pulled out her chair.
She smiled over at him and he nearly turned to mush. God, he loved her. “I’m fine, no worries.” She squeezed his hand, offering reassurance.
Her mother cleared her throat from across the table. The woman was quickly becoming annoying. To think this would soon become his future mother in law. Well, once he got around to proposing anyway.
They ate their lunch in silence. He peeked over at Lynn every now and then to make sure she was eating. He was actually surprised, though, at the amount of food she put back in such a short amount of time. He would definitely have to keep his kitchen stocked for her. Her appetite would only increase in the upcoming months.
They hadn’t really discussed her moving in, but it seemed like the obvious thing to do. With the baby coming, they couldn’t possibly continue to live separately. She was sure to fight him tooth and nail, but this wasn’t something he would leave up for discussion. He wouldn’t live separately from his child, and he sure as hell wasn’t letting her go.
“Mama, I’ve got some pretty exciting news to tell you.”
Eric looked up as Lynn spoke, and for the first time he could see how nervous she was. He reached under the table and took her shaking hand in his. She looked over at him and took a deep breath. He saw her visibly relax and his heart grew. She felt safe with him.
“What is it?” Her mother replied as she continued poking at her food. Eric’s blood began to boil. No one was going to treat Lynn this way. Not even her mother. Couldn’t she show a little common decency for her daughter?
“Excuse me, Rosa. Lynn would like to tell you something.” He heard Lynn gasp in shock. It was probably the first time anyone had thought to correct Rosa Burton.
That got her mother’s attention.
“What is so important that it can’t wait until I finish eating?” She glared across the table at Lynn.
“It’s okay mama we can talk when you fi-”
“Tell her Lynn.” He held back his anger because this wasn’t Lynn’s fault; her mother was to blame. Lynn was so used to letting her have her way it came naturally, but not anymore. He wouldn’t have her stress Lynn out and possibly hurt herself or their baby.
Lynn remained quiet.
“Don’t go all quiet now. What is it?”
“We’re having a baby.”
The sound of her mother’s fork hitting the plate rang out through the restaurant. Other diners looked in their direction. There was a long silence as Lynn squeezed his hand under the table, waiting for her mother’s response.
If looks could kill, Eric would be a dead man. Lynn’s mother glared at him from across the table.
“You did this on purpose!” She yelled at Eric, causing even more of a scene.
“Mama, stop it.”
“No. You stop it. You walk in here and spring this on me. You could have told me over the phone. What do you want me to say? Congratulations, you’ve officially ruined your life?”
He felt Lynn tense up next to him. He had to get her out of here. He’d be damned if she went into another attack.
He spoke calmly as he rose from the table. “Come on baby, we’re leaving now.”
“You get your hands off my daughter. You’ve already done enough. Who the hell do you think you are, telling her what to do?”
Eric continued to help Lynn out of her seat. He was trying to show some restraint. He didn’t want to say anything more that would upset Lynn. Lynn remained quiet as she stood.
“Oh, you just gonna let him tell you what to do ,huh? Here I thought I raised you better-”
Eric’s anger gave way. He involuntarily slammed his fist down on the table between them. “Enough! I will respect the fact that you’re Lynn’s mother, but I will not stand here and allow you to talk to her this way.” He was pissed. It was never his intention to yell at her, but enough was enough.
“We came here to give you good news. Hell, great news, and all you’ve done is thrown insult after insult our way. I get it that you’re not happy she’s with me, but Lynn is, and we are having a baby, so deal with it! I love her and this baby is coming. If you want anything to do with it then you’d better get your act together.”
Rosa stared back at him in shock. He turned his gaze to Lynn who stared at him in shock as well.
“God, baby, I’m so sorry.” He rubbed his hand through his hair. Him and his big mouth. He began to apologize. “I just couldn’t stand here and let her talk to you this way. The doctor said no stress and I-”
“I love you.” She smiled up at him before looking over at her mother. “You heard him, mama. This is supposed to be a happy time and I won’t let you ruin it for us. I’m the happiest I have been in years, and I owe it all to Eric. I won’t let you take that away from me. You know my number. Call me when you get your act together and not for anything else. I’m done giving handouts. Goodbye mama.”
Rosa stared back at Lynn in disbelief. The only noise in the restaurant was from a grill in the kitchen. Eric watched Lynn as she grabbed her purse and turned to leave. With one last look at her mother, he turned to follow.
As they exited the restaurant, Lynn fought away the familiar pressure building in her chest.
“Are you okay, baby?” Eric came up behind her placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. She loved this man. He had shocked the hell out of her, standing up to her mother like that. Hell, it had down right turned her on.
She smiled over her shoulder at him. “Surprisingly, yes. I should be asking you that.”
“I’m so so. But you know what would make me feel better?” Of course, the man thought of sex at a time like this. It was all he thought about.
She turned around to chew him out. “Eric now is not –” She gasped as she watched him take a knee on the concrete side walk. People stopped to stare. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a teal blue ring box and opened it.
“I wanted today to be special for you, and I wanted to do this right. But with what just happened, I’m just going to have to improvise a little bit. This ring was burning a hole in my pocket.”
“I love you, Lynn. And you have no idea how happy I am that I’m going to be a dad. But I would not be complete without you as my wife. I haven’t been this happy in years, and it’s all because of you. Please say you’ll marry me?”
She waited for the pressure to build. There was none. This was what she wanted. Nothing else mattered in this moment.
He let out a loud breath. “Oh, thank God. I was sure after I yelled at your mom I would be in the dog house.” She pulled him up and into her arms, kissing him feverishly as random strangers cheered them on.
She broke the kiss and stared at him. “You’re amazing. You know that?”
“I’m glad you think so now, because I may have already called and told my parents about the baby.”
‘What when?” She didn’t think she had been in the restroom that long.
“The morning after your panic attack. Boy, mom wanted to come up right away. I had to beg her and Sherry not to.”
She hit him playfully on the shoulder. “You’re lucky I love you.”
“Yes, I am baby. Yes I am.”
